【Jiuji Reading Notes】
♥ The clear and still water of the mountain lake reflects the original clarity of the mountains and the sky. You can reflect this, too. When you are peaceful and calm enough, you can truly reflect the mountains, the blue sky, and the moon. You reflect what you see as it is, nothing is distorted.
♥ There is a river of perception in each of us. Perception arises, lingers for a moment, and then fades away. If the mind is not calm, we cannot see clearly. Like a windy lake, the image you see is distorted. Our perceptions often go awry, causing suffering to ourselves and others. It is helpful to look deeply into the nature of perception and not to believe too much. Be too certain and you will suffer. When we ask ourselves, "Are you sure?" we have the opportunity to watch again to see if our perception is correct
♥ We believe that our perception is complete, but often it is not. Perception (perception, cognition, idea) in Chinese is "thinking", the upper half is "appearance", that is, appearance, and the lower half is "heart". When we think of something, an image "image" of it is created in our "mind", but most of them are false and unreal. It's easy to confuse our mind's image of something with its reality. It's important not to trust your perceptions too much
♥ Imagine you are walking at dusk and see a snake. You screamed and ran back inside to find your friends. Everyone went outside with flashlights. However, when you shine a light on the snake, you discover that it is not a snake at all, but a rope. Mistaking a rope for a snake is a misconception. Mindfulness helps us avoid falling into false perceptions
♥ The practice of total awareness is to look deeply, so as to transcend false perceptions and see the reality. Thinking of a rope as a snake may make us cry. The feeling of fear comes from wrong perceptions. Our perceptions are often inaccurate and may bring about strong feelings and reactions, leading to a lot of unnecessary suffering. Once we see the reality of our fears, the fear disappears
♥The source of perception, the way we see, comes from our unconscious. Most of our perceptions are wrong and carry various subjective biases. Whether we praise or blame, be happy or complain, all depends on our perception. Perception is made up of many aspects, including our cravings, sufferings such as anger and ignorance, as well as habits and past experiences. Happiness or pain depends largely on your own perception. It is very important to look deeply into your own perception and identify its source
♥ One day, a farmer went to the field and found that his horse had run away. The villager said, "Oh, what bad luck!" The next day, the horse came back with two other horses, and the villager said again, "What good luck!" Later, the farmer's son fell off one of the horses and fell. A broken leg. The villagers expressed sympathy: "What a misfortune." Soon, the war broke out and all the young people in the village were drafted. Only the farmer's son was not drafted because he had a broken leg. The villager also told the farmer that his son's broken leg was a "lucky thing." Nothing can be judged simply as fortunate or unfortunate, good or bad, as this ancient story reveals. You have to travel across all time and space to understand the true impact of things. Every success comes with some difficulty, and every failure contributes to wisdom and future success. Everything has its blessings and misfortunes. Fortunately or unfortunately, good or bad, they are just concepts that we recognize
♥ Our practice is to see beyond appearances and see more clearly. Unless we look deeply into reality and discover the impermanent and interdependent nature of things, we will continue to cling to appearances. When we go beyond appearances, concepts, and opinions, we get to the ultimate reality. We need to look beyond appearances to the essence. When we no longer have delusions based on appearance, our perception becomes insight
♥ Because of impermanence, everything is possible
♥ A man was rowing upstream when he suddenly saw another boat coming down towards him. "Look out!" he shouted, but the boat hit him and nearly sank his boat. The man was angry and roaring, but a closer look revealed that there was no one in the boat and it was floating down the river on its own. When our perception is wrong, it will cause a lot of unnecessary suffering. When we look deeply into things to understand their nature, we will avoid being misled and needlessly suffering.
