Huineng took courage and said: "I want to go to the Master of the Fifth Patriarch in Huangmei, Hubei Province to seek an audience and learn Buddhism." His mother, Mrs. Li, was shocked when she heard this. She did not expect it. She thought that there was only one seedling in the Lu family, and the succession of the family line depended on him, and becoming a monk meant that the family was no longer in the family, so she and her brother came up with ways to stop him, but God was helping him. Li said, Alas! This is God's will.
When Huineng was 24 years old, as usual, he walked 13 kilometers from Longshan to Chaimi City to sell firewood outside the south city of Xinzhou County.
This place happened to be opposite Jintai Temple. He listened to the sutras for a long time and was deeply influenced by it. When he heard "There should be no place to live, but the heart is born", he felt an indescribable warmth in his heart.
He is gifted with intelligence and a strong memory, and he has memorized all the scriptures in his heart. Seeing that Huineng was so pious, the monk asked: "The firewood seller, you come here every day to listen to the chanting. Do you understand and remember it?"
Huineng bowed hurriedly and said, "Master doesn't ask me, but I also want to ask Master whether this sutra is easy to remember, but the main idea of the sutra is not clear to Master. Explain it to me?"
The monk thought he was exaggerating. It takes many times to memorize a scripture before you can memorize it. You, a firewood seller, don't know how difficult it is, so he said, "You said it's easy to memorize it. Read it and I'll listen to it." Huineng read out the scripture he heard from beginning to end.
After hearing this, the monk felt that something was unexpected and did not dare to look down upon him, so he said frankly: "This scripture is called the Diamond Sutra. It was transmitted from the fifth patriarch of Dongchan Temple in Huangmei County, Hubei Province Hongren Master. The scriptures are profound. "It can't be explained in a few words. You like Buddhist scriptures and are smart. If you go to Dongchan Temple to consult the Fifth Patriarch, you will definitely learn a lot of Dharma principles."
Huineng was very happy after hearing this. Seeing that he had a good foundation, the monk said: "If you are determined to learn Buddhist scriptures, I can help you with ten taels of silver to settle your mother at home. However, becoming a Buddhist monk will determine your life, and you must obtain the consent of your family."

After returning home, Huineng plucked up the courage and said, "I want to go to the Master of the Fifth Patriarch in Huangmei, Hubei Province to seek an audience and learn Buddhism."
Li was shocked when he heard this. He was unexpected and seemed very unhappy. She thought that there was only one seedling in the Lu family, and it was entirely up to him to continue the family line, and becoming a monk would mean the end of the family, so she politely advised Hui Neng not to join Buddhism.
Ms. Li tried to dissuade her and said: "What if you go and leave your sick old mother behind? Are you so bearable? You lost your father when you were three years old, and your mother had a hard time raising you. Now, you want to leave your mother and become a monk?"
Although her mother tried her best to persuade, Hui Neng's heart towards the Buddha was unshakable, and she always insisted on meeting the Fifth Patriarch politely.
Mrs. Li thought that her son was so intelligent and filial, and so sincere in his devotion to Buddhism. She was too embarrassed to refuse, so she had no choice but to refuse and said: "If you must study Buddhism, ask your uncle first! If your uncle agrees to your going, that will be fine."
Huineng immediately went to Jiupeng Village to find his uncle. After his uncle learned about Huineng's intention to learn Buddhism, he also advised Huineng not to be rash and emotional, let alone to escape into Buddhism.
But no matter how his uncle explained his advice, it was difficult to convince Huineng to give up the idea of becoming a monk. Huineng instead asked his uncle to do his mother's ideological work.
When he was in trouble, his uncle discussed with Mr. Li for a while and then deliberately raised a difficult problem to make Huineng give up his mind.
Uncle and Mrs. Li then led Huineng to the entrance of Pengcun, pointed to a big stone on the roadside and said to Huineng: "If you can bow this big stone to both sides, it will prove that you are sincerely worshiping Buddha. You can go, otherwise you can't go!"
Huineng asked loudly: "Uncle, are you serious about what you said?" His uncle also loudly replied: "Seriously! I will not regret it!"
"Okay! Huineng agreed immediately. He believed that sincerity will lead to success.

Huineng came to the big stone with his eyes closed slightly, clasped his hands together, knelt down silently, and muttered words.
In this way, day and night, regardless of rain or sun, day after day, Huineng's faith was as solid as a rock, and he recited the Diamond Sutra devoutly and prayed silently.
Huineng knelt and worshiped for seventy-seven forty-nine days. On the last day, there were dark clouds, dark sky, thunder and lightning, and heavy rain. Suddenly there was a deafening thunderbolt in the sky, a thunder and lightning, and a bright light shot straight down from the sky like a sharp sword, hitting the huge stone directly, splitting the big stone at the entrance of the village into two pieces.
Huineng saw this and exclaimed ecstatically: "God help me!" When his mother, uncle and villagers witnessed this magical scene, they were very moved, shocked and amazed.
Is this God's will? Or a coincidence? Or is "Buddha's Dharma boundless"? My uncle thought to himself: Neng'er's determination to seek Buddha is as strong as a rock. Even God has helped him, so how can I have the nerve to stop him?
So after discussing it with Mr. Li, he said: "I remember when Xu Guoshi asked for the acupuncture points for burying Neng'er's father, you chose the direction of Yinshen, hoping that the Lu family would continue to smoke for thousands of years. Now Neng'er is determined to become a monk. It is God's will. In the future, Neng'er will practice in Buddhism. If you achieve positive results, nourish the world, be respected by others, and spread from generation to generation, that is the eternal cigarette that will benefit all people!" Huineng's mother suddenly realized at this time, and her shock turned into surprise, and she said to Huineng sincerely: "Neng'er, you are really good. Yes, you have a predestined relationship with the Buddha, and it is God's will, so you can go with peace of mind!"

In this way, his uncle and mother agreed to Huineng's request to go to Huangmei, Hubei to study Buddhism. There is a deep love between mother and son, and family members. After hearing this, Huineng was so moved that his eyes filled with tears and he was speechless when he saw such a scene.
A few days later, Huineng settled her mother and household affairs, packed her clothes and luggage, and went to her uncle's house in Liucun with her mother to say goodbye to her relatives.
Before leaving, Huineng, his mother and uncle came to the huge stone in front of Liucun to burn incense and bow before leaving, and then said goodbye to his mother and uncle.
In 661 AD, Lu Huineng, who was 24 years old at the time, was wearing coarse cloth, carrying a bag on his back, and wearing straw sandals. He looked calm and walked vigorously. He set off from Biemushi to go north to Dongshan Temple in Huangmei, Hubei.
This development was the starting point for creating the Sixth Generation of Wind Banners in Chinese Zen Buddhism.
