The Fuzhou YMCA, full of Republican style, is the birthplace of the Fuzhou youth revolution. It is also the only YMCA building in our province that retains its original appearance. Fuzhou Youth Association is located at the intersection of the North Bridge of Jiefang Bridge in Fuzhou and Zhongting Street, the most traditional street in Fuzhou. It was built in 1912 by Mr. Huang Naishang, a famous overseas Chinese leader and democratic revolutionary from Fujian, who invested 45,000 silver dollars to purchase land after he took over as the president of the Fuzhou YMCA. The
building covers an area of 8156.4 square meters and is close to the Minjiang River. It was once the earliest and largest comprehensive building in Fuzhou in modern times. The building is entirely made of red bricks, with three floors in the front building and four floors in the back building, separated by a patio in the middle. The building houses the only indoor lighted basketball and volleyball court in Fuzhou at that time. The second to third floors on the right side of the front building are the classrooms and student dormitories of the Fuzhou YMCA. The first floor is the western restaurant, student union, barber salon and shower room. The first floor on the left is the cinema, the office of the Director-General, the YWCA department, and the conference room. In the middle is the lobby, which is the office. There is a swimming pool in the basement of the back building, and a gym, spiritual room, library and reading room upstairs. Arched doors and windows, spacious function halls, nanmu floors, unique patios and staggered corridors. Fuzhou's first silent film (called "movie" at the time) was screened here. The original inscription "The Foundation of Self-Strength" at the entrance of
explains everything. Teach scientific knowledge and spread ideas. The famous writer and poet Yu Dafu came to Fuzhou from Guangzhou in December 1926 and lived in the YMCA for half a year. Ten years later, in February 1936, Yu Dafu served in the Fujian Provincial Government at the invitation of Chen Yi, chairman of the Fujian Provincial Government. During this period, he lived and lived in the YMCA, wrote many literary works, and delivered a public lecture titled "Prospects of New Chinese Literature" at the YMCA. In his speech, Yu Dafu proposed that the trend of new literature should be centered on national liberation, inherit the patriotic spirit of the national hero Qi Jiguang, and sound the clarion call for resistance against Japan and national salvation.
During the Anti-Japanese War , the Fuzhou Youth Association served as a platform for cooperation and a "foundation for self-reliance" to communicate, unite and unite overseas Chinese and international friends to fight against Japan and carry out anti-aggression and oppression. After the "September 18th" Incident in 1931, the Fuzhou Youth Association Building became one of the bases for the Fuzhou Anti-Japanese and National Salvation Movement. A large number of progressive young people in Fuzhou organized reading clubs at the Youth Association to guide the reading of progressive books and periodicals, promote national salvation culture, and spread anti-Japanese and national salvation ideas. At the same time, they carried out anti-Japanese and national salvation activities and established the "Fuzhou Cultural Circle National Salvation Association" to encourage everyone to use their pens as guns to fight a protracted and desperate struggle against the enemy.
During the Liberation War, the Youth League was an important intelligence base and underground transportation station under the leadership of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. On the eve of the liberation of Fuzhou, Xie Xiaojiu, a representative of the underground party of the Communist Party of China, worked at the Fuzhou Youth Association for half a year, providing strong support for the liberation of Fuzhou City, Fujian Province. He was a promoter and historical witness of the liberation of Fuzhou.
At the beginning of 2022, Fuzhou City launched the "Heart of Minjiang" construction strategy to recreate Fuzhou's century-old youth! On the basis of the original old building of the Fuzhou Youth Association, it was expanded in the east and west directions along the river to build a new atmosphere of social progress in Fuzhou, becoming a core section of Fuzhou's "Two Rivers and Four Banks" and a new hotspot for Fuzhou's young citizens to check in, study and consume! Become a good story. On the morning of August 16, 2022, I went with my friends from the portrait shooting group of the Chinese Photographers Association. What I saw is as follows.
