Multi-zone metering
Divide the picture into several areas, first measure the highlights of each area, and after comprehensive calculation, obtain an exposure value that takes into account each area.
Simply put, if you want to pursue a balanced exposure of the overall picture, this mode is a good choice. Sometimes, the zone metering method often has the ability to compensate for backlight.
If you want to achieve stable exposure of the main image, you may wish to use this mode.
Center-weighted metering
is the most traditional metering method in current digital cameras. The metering algorithm of most cameras focuses on about 2/3 of the center of the screen, and also takes some degree of consideration to the surrounding areas.
When you need to arrange the subject in the middle of the picture, using center-weighted metering can highlight the subject while giving appropriate brightness to the surrounding environment. However, this metering mode is not applicable under backlight conditions.
Focused metering
is based on spot metering, selecting a smaller area (generally about 10% of the center), and mixing the reflected light for evaluation.
For center-weighted metering, its range will be more concentrated. When shooting, it is easier to obtain a closer to real metering effect. When shooting automatically, it also avoids exposure errors to a certain extent.
Highlight focus metering
, as the name suggests, is a metering mode that assigns metering weight to highlights, which can effectively avoid highlight overflow and provide more delicate tonal control.
The saying “It’s better to overexpose than overexpose” often echoes in my ears, and the details lost by overexposure are generally difficult to recover. Highlight-focused metering will give priority to protecting the highlight area, providing the latitude for dark areas to be processed in post-production.
Generally speaking, in high-contrast scenes, such as wedding scenes or stage performances, the film effect of this mode is still good.
How to set up spot measurement linkage
When you select [Focus Metering] mode and change the focus point, the machine's metering will not change accordingly, but will focus on a small area in the center of the screen.
