"When composing a photograph, can the subject be placed on the edge of the picture?" This is a question asked by a student. I share it in the hope that it will inspire photography enthusiasts.
Let’s take a look at some photos first.
The main building in this photo is in the center of the picture, and the photo is of the old train station next to the National Cathedral in Kuala Lumpur.
Monkey This photo was taken at the Beijing Zoo. The monkey is on the right third line of the picture. This is one of my favorite photos, because most people take photos of animals from a first-person perspective, but this photo is about looking at humans from an animal perspective.
This photo was taken at Xining Kumbum Monastery. The character is on the third line on the right side of the picture, with his eyes facing the left. The overall composition is also very balanced.
In photography composition, in most cases we need to shoot the picture horizontally and vertically, and place the subject in the middle of the picture or on the third line. This composition makes the picture appear smooth and natural, and the subject is more prominent.
However, this does not mean that all photos need such a step-by-step composition. They should be comprehensively considered based on the characteristics of the subject matter itself and the subjective expression of the author.
For example, in portrait photos, we usually leave more space in front of the person's glasses, such as the effect in the picture above. But there are also special moments, such as the work "The Scream" below.
This photo breaks the convention of composition. It was taken by senior Wu Yinxian. The head of the character is very close to the edge of the picture, giving the audience a strong sense of depression. But this effect is exactly the theme that the author wants to express. The work well presents the inner world of the oppressed people who want to resist.
The picture below was taken by me. The character only has one pair of feet highlighted, and it is also at the edge of the frame and is about to "walk out" of the frame. Of course, my photo is not as profound as the one taken by the master, but it is still very interesting, right?
Regarding photography composition, my suggestion is to look at good works and practice more. First master all the compositional forms and be able to use them skillfully. Then you can forget about these rules and rely on your intuition to shoot whatever you feel comfortable with.
In short, don’t compose for the sake of composition, and don’t break for the sake of breaking. Everything must serve the theme of the work.
