In December 1958, I accepted the task of the editorial department and went to Gansu with excitement to interview this great project. When I came to the construction site, I was immediately infected by the unique and arduous atmosphere of the "Great Leap Forward" era, and even more moved by the enthusiasm of the peasant brothers to change the face of drought and poverty. As a photographer, I should vividly express the heroic spirit of peasant brothers who are not afraid of difficulties and are determined to defeat nature through a photo. This photo should become the theme photos of this group of special reports, and must be taken well... According to the introduction of the construction site leadership organs, Jiudianxia is the most difficult part of all projects, and the battle is a youth commando team composed mainly of members of the Communist Youth League.
When I came to Jiudian Gorge, the scene in front of me was shocking. Jiudian Gorge is truly well-known. Two mountains and one water form a narrow valley. Looking down from the mountain, the Tao River becomes a thin white belt. How difficult it is to dig canals on this daunting cliff with simple tools on hard rocks! After careful observation, I felt that the environment and scene here were very typical, so I took the opportunity to take the photo of "Dimmerse the Tao River to the Mountain". In order to increase the sense of layering and atmosphere, I used backlighting, and the dust raised during work increased the dynamic and momentum of the picture. In 1959, the Pictorial published this set of special reports under the title "Tao River Draws Colorful Clouds", and this one was used for the theme photo (but it was a color film).
Then, the 3rd issue of " Chinese Photography " magazine also published this work in 1959, titled "Turn the Tao River up the Mountain". In October 1959, this work entitled "Dimmersing the Tao River to the Mountains" won the gold medal at the third International Art Photography Exhibition held in Hungary, and then won the first prize in the " Socialism Victory" photography competition held in the Democratic Republic of Germany. At that time, the Soviet Union's " Pravda " and "Soviet Photography" also published this work. Later, he won the first prize in the 1957-1959 Excellent Works Awards of "Chinese Photography". Although the photos won awards one after another, the peasant brothers who fought with their flesh and blood on the Yintao construction site failed to fulfill their dream of overcoming drought and getting rid of poverty.Unfortunately, due to the aggressive advance of decision makers, it surpassed the possibility of reality. Two years later, the "Tao Mountain Diversion Project", which was once regarded as a great initiative, was forced to quietly dismount. The dream of more than 100,000 peasant brothers bleeding and sweating, and even sacrificing their lives to fight for it was wasted, greatly damaging the enthusiasm of the peasants.
The photography work "Tour River Water Up the Mountain" is contrary to the wishes I had taken at the time. It became the Great Leap Forward era when "one day is equal to twenty years" and "running into communism", a heroic tragedy song of the times. Today, whenever I see this work, as a witness, I feel deeply moved.

Back then, Jingyuan Construction Zone was the fourth working area of the entire Taojiu project, with a project length of about 42 kilometers. It is arranged along the upstream and downstream of the Tao River and is constructed in nine brigades in sequence. Among them, although the length of Jiudianxia and project is only 6,170 meters, is the most difficult and dangerous area of the Taojiu project. It belongs to the construction scope of the Seventh Brigade of Jingyuan Construction Area. Based on this, the Provincial Youth League Committee and the General Administration of Taoyuan Engineering named this section of construction site "Communist Youth League Section". The captain and secretary of the brigade was personally appointed by Xu Xing, Secretary General of the Provincial Youth League Committee...
