diphenhydramine is a B-grade drug and is the first generation of antihistamines. It has a strong inhibitory effect on central nervous system and also has an atropine-like effect. Reproductive study conducted on rat and rabbits, with the highest dose of 5 times that of human dose. No evidence of diphenhydramine hydrochloride causing impaired fertility or causing harm to the fetus.
However, there is no study on adequate and good control of pregnant women. Since animal reproductive studies do not always predict human responses, the drug can only be used during pregnancy if it is clearly needed.
