Pregnancy Book
"Calcium is conducive to the development of fetal bones, healthy growth of teeth, and the storage of calcium in the newborn's body. But how to supplement calcium? How to supplement? Why? Many people are confused." Recently, Wang Danyang, director of obstetrics and chief physician of Liaoning Women and Children's Hospital (Liaoning Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital), said in an interview with a reporter from Liaoshen Evening News.
Wang Danyang introduced that pregnant women are prone to calcium deficiency during pregnancy, and there are three main reasons.
First, during pregnancy, the maternal calcium is excreted more from the urine, and the urinary calcium excretion is higher than during non-pregnancy periods, so the urinary calcium excretion increases, resulting in a decrease in the maternal serum.
Second, the blood volume of pregnant women increases during pregnancy, and the extracellular fluid in the body will also increase. Blood dilution will make the concentration of blood calcium relatively lower. This is a physiological reaction and one of the reasons for calcium deficiency in pregnant women.
Third, pregnant women have strong estrogen secretion during pregnancy, which will also inhibit the absorption of calcium.

"In addition, the nutrition of the fetus needs to be delivered by the mother, and the fetus' growth and development will absorb a certain amount of calcium. Therefore, relatively speaking, the mother's burden is heavier, so it is necessary to supplement the calcium agent to maintain the health of the mother itself and the fetus." Wang Danyang said that calcium deficiency in pregnant women may cause osteoporosis in pregnant women, thereby causing calf muscle spasms, that is, calf cramps, which is a manifestation of calcium deficiency during pregnancy. Calcium deficiency during pregnancy can also cause loose teeth, joint pain, back pain, etc. in pregnant women.
"Calcium deficiency will also increase the risk of pregnant women suffering from gestational diabetes and hypertension during pregnancy, and even affect the delivery method. If there is a serious calcium deficiency, it may lead to the end of pregnancy early. In addition, maternal calcium deficiency will affect the fetal bone development and teeth growth, and even increase the risk of rickets . Therefore, calcium supplementation is very important for pregnant women and must be taken seriously." Wang Danyang said.
So how to supplement calcium?
Wang Danyang suggested that calcium supplements can be supplemented by oral medication. Pregnant women can start supplementing calcium from 14 weeks of pregnancy, and they need to supplement 0.6 to 1.5 grams per day. While supplementing calcium, you should also supplement vitamin D. Vitamin D can improve the intestinal absorption of calcium and regulate the concentration of blood calcium.
"But the calcium supplement should also be supplemented in moderation. Too much calcium supplementation will have adverse effects on the physical health of pregnant women." Wang Danyang instructed that the time of calcium supplementation through medicine should be staggered with the time of eating, because the diet may contain oxalic acid, phosphate , etc., which will form calcium salts that are difficult to dissolve with calcium, which may lead to the formation of stones in the body.
Wang Danyang suggested that in terms of diet, you can eat foods high in calcium such as milk, meat, animal liver, egg yolk, cream, spinach, kelp, shrimp skin to supplement calcium. In addition, calcium supplementation through sun exposure is also very important. In winter, you can bask in the sun for 20 to 30 minutes a day and in summer for about 10 minutes to promote calcium absorption through ultraviolet rays.
