趣味俚語｜「go under the knife」可不是「去刀的下面」！

俚語（Slang）就是一種就算知道每個單詞是什麼意思，連起來還是理解不了的神奇存在，和漢語里的諺語成語一樣讓非第一語言學習者摸不著頭腦。

中西方不僅飲食習慣不同，就連使用的餐具也截然不同，中國有關於筷子的諺語，國外自然也有關於刀叉的俚語。

字面意思：把叉子叉在我/某物身上

實際意思：已經完成；已經好了

我們在烤肉或煮肉時，會把叉子叉進肉里確認熟了沒。所以如果說You can stick a fork in me!就是「我已經好了！」的意思，這個短語適用於許多場合，可以拿來形容事情完成了，或指事情無法再繼續下去。

例句：

A: How much time do you need to complete the Power Point?

A:你還需要多少時間完成PPT？

B: You can stick a fork in me!

B:我已經完成了！

A: Do you want one more chocolate cake?

字面意思：刀叉玩得好

實際意思：狼吞虎咽

play a good knife and fork字面上的意思是「把刀叉玩得很好」，也就是刀叉用得很順手，便衍伸為「狼吞虎咽」、「吃得很急」。

例句：

The kids were playing a good knife and fork because they spent the whole day running outside.

孩子們狼吞虎咽地大吃特吃，因為他們今天在外面跑了一整天。

go under the knife

字面意思：去刀的下面

實際意思：開刀；動手術

在中文若要說動手術，我們會說「開刀」或「動刀」，在英文也有這樣的說法，那就是go under the knife，等同於have surgery、undergo surgery、have an operation，如果要加上開刀的部位，要用介詞on來連接。

例句：

Nowadays, more and more people decided to go under the knife to to change their appearances.

現在有越來越多人決定動刀來改變他們的外貌。

字面意思：像刀切開奶油

實際意思：輕而易舉

刀子非常鋒利，如果拿來切奶油的話一刀就可以切開了，也就形容事情「輕而易舉」。類似的俚語有：child's play；duck soup

例句：

Boston Red Sox cut through the Los Angeles Dodgers like a hot knife through butter.

波士頓紅襪隊輕而易舉地打敗了洛杉磯道奇隊。

字面意思：在刀鋒邊緣

實際意思：劍拔弩張；情況危急

例句：

The US politics will remain on a knife edge until the midterm election ends.

直到期中選舉結束前，美國政治仍舊處於劍拔弩張的狀態。

如果是knife-edge 則會變成形容詞，可以指「情況危急的」，也可以指「尖銳的、鋒利的」。例如：

Dabajian Mountain has many knife-edge mountain ridges for climbers to challenge themselves.

大霸尖山有許多陡峭尖銳的山脊讓登山客挑戰自我。

twist the knife (in the wound)

字面意思：旋轉刀子

實際意思：落井下石；戳傷疤

twist這個動詞有「纏、扭」的意思，而twist the knife (in the wound)這個短語是指「揭開他人傷疤；在別人傷口上撒鹽」。

例句：

In order to further twist the knife , he kept mentioning her past that she was unwilling to face again.

為了繼續在她的傷口上灑鹽，他不斷提起她不願回憶的過往。
