YouTube has closed the channel of Pornhub, the world's second largest porn site, due to "multiple" violations of community guidelines. According to Google, Pornhub's account violates YouTube's external linking policy, which prohibits users from linking to content that is not allowed on the platform, such as pornographic content.
YouTube spokesman Jack Malon said: "After review, we terminated the Pornhub Official channel after multiple violations of our community guidelines. We enforce our policies equally to everyone, and channels that repeatedly violate or commit to illegal content will be terminated."
Pornhub's YouTube channel had nearly 900,000 subscribers before it was closed, mainly publishing content related to promoting the security work of the website and its performers. The company also imposed age restrictions on videos posted on YouTube, requiring viewers to be 18 or older, and "strongly denies" claims about their posting or linking adult content. Pornhub said, "Pornhub maintains the absolute best trust and security measures on the internet and takes special care to ensure it does not violate any of YouTube's community guidelines, unfortunately this is just the latest example of discrimination against adult industry practitioners, a trend that can be seen in social media and all other aspects of life, especially when some groups hypocritically confuse voluntary adult content with sexual exploitation."
A few months before the news that Pornhub was removed by YouTube, Instagram permanently banned Pornhub's accounts, saying it violated rules regarding nudity, adult content and sexual temptation. Like YouTube, Instagram also claims that Pornhub encourages Instagram users to leave the site to watch adult content. Pornhub responded to the ban in an open letter, criticizing Instagram for deleting its "fully PG-rated" accounts, while other creators continued to post "nude and open sexual behavior without being affected."
Pressure surrounding Pornhub and its parent company MindGeek, located in Luxembourg, continues to increase, with some accusing the website of failing to control content and allowing videos containing child abuse materials and involuntary subjects to be played out. These concerns led to the resignation of Pornhub CEO Feras Antoon and COO David Tassillo, and also affected Pornhub's relationship with other companies. In 2020, Visa and Mastercard cut off transactions on Pornhub due to "illegal content" on the website, although the two companies still face lawsuits accusing them of intentional "helping MindGeek to make profits in child pornography."
