OPPO announced the news of making cloud.
On December 14, OPPO announced the launch of Andes Smart Cloud at the annual OPPO Future Technology Conference (OPPO INNO DAY 2022). However, unlike the idea of Internet companies in cloud production, this company, which started with hardware products, does not intend to provide public cloud services, but chooses to serve its hundreds of millions of end users.
In the past, mobile phone manufacturers have worked hard on hardware and software, so why did OPPO go to the cloud? What exactly will it do? And what value can it bring to users?
01
Cloud is becoming a new productivity
Some time ago, ChatGPT unexpectedly became popular in the circle of friends.
In theory, chatbots are not new, but unlike the fool-like chatbots in the past, ChatGPT has some eye-catching things: it can write papers and tell jokes, and even when the user commands ChatGPT to find a program's bug, it can not only clearly describe the bug and cause, but also automatically fix the bug and write a correct program.
Although many users experience it directly through their mobile phones, the AI models and algorithms trained in the cloud are actually due to the credit. Before this chatbot, AI painting began to attract more and more people's attention, and AIGC (AI production content, which belongs to generative AI) has become a new trend.
similar to fresh application scenarios will appear frequently in the future. Major manufacturers have already deployed popular fields such as digital human , meta-universe, and virtual reality. However, these application scenarios have a common feature: they require large storage and large computing power, and it is difficult to bring a good experience by relying on the computing power of mobile phones and other terminals. Innovation in hardware in
is also facing similar difficulties.
AR glasses is a typical product of the integration of virtual and real, but this type of product has not been widely popularized on a large scale. One of the main reasons is that it cannot solve the computing and delay problems. Because AR and VR have extremely high requirements for rendering computing power, it is difficult to meet the needs of computing power on devices with smart glasses alone.
The terminals and sensors that collect data are growing at a visible rate, which also brings great trouble to the processing of data. Yiou data shows that in 2020, the number of IoT connected devices in China has reached 3.66 billion. In the future, benefiting from the explosion of demand for a variety of scenarios and the large-scale implementation of 5G, China's Internet of Things connection volume will maintain rapid growth, and it is expected that the number of IoT connected devices will reach 17.34 billion in 2025.
data explosion has never been more obvious than it is now. A considerable number of these devices are split, each with its own systems and operate independently. This also means that the data cannot be connected, and the basic experience of everyone is still single-point intelligence.
In the past decade, mobile phones and other pan-terminals have basically followed this development path in improving user experience: either improve the performance of the hardware or optimize the software system.
But to truly enter the world of virtual and real integration, it requires that the future terminals have unprecedented interactivity, and the infrastructure that can portray hyperrealistic virtual space and digital people, including supporting PB-level scene data storage and massive computing power engines. Mobile phones, watches, VR devices, etc. are limited by their own size and power consumption, and they cannot carry these applications that require ultra-high computing power.
"If you want to continue to promote product innovation and continue to make users like it, you must be able to take a step forward in technology. Hope it can extend upward, that is, to the cloud. Some terminals cannot do or cannot do well can be done by the cloud to form a three-dimensional -liter ." Chen Xiaochun, head of OPPO's intelligent cloud strategy, said.
Therefore, after hardware and software, the cloud is becoming a brand new productivity of the pan-terminal.
02
OPPO How to do cloud
"We are not doing cloud
"We are not doing cloud till we sell storage and computing resources, our purpose is to serve end users." Liu Haifeng, president of OPPO Digital Engineering Department, said that OPPO will think overall about storage, computing, AI, and even the connection between terminal clouds and communication between devices.
Relying on the advantages of cloud in storage, computing and intelligence, Andes Intelligent Cloud will bring users three major experiences: reconstructing storage experience, enhancing intelligent services, and exploring the integration of virtual and real. The cloud-native distributed storage CubeFS, which is dominated by
OPPO, has a separate storage architecture and loose coupling characteristics that support horizontal expansion and elastic deployment, allowing users to get a more local storage experience anytime, anywhere.
OPPO Unlimited Cloud Album is the first important application scenario of CubeFS. Compared with general cloud photo albums, OPPO has comprehensively upgraded and evolved storage space, intelligent search capabilities and automatic photo recollection generation quality and effect. Based on more image storage, using the more powerful computing power in the cloud, Unlimited Cloud Album can generate more exciting life memory albums more accurately, more complete and more real-time.
At the computing level, Andean Intelligent Cloud combines the computing power on the cloud side and the end side. The computing power on the end side is used for real-time data processing, the computing power on the cloud side is more used for network computing, edge computing and larger-scale model computing.
Of course, cloud collaboration has a very important premise, that is, a high-speed transmission network is needed in the middle. With the popularity of 5G, wireless transmission with large bandwidth and low latency can solve this problem well. At present, OPPO has built RTC communication technology with extremely short communication delays between the clouds.
But the deeper value of the combination of end-cloud lies in its ability to bring users an enhanced intelligent service experience.
For example, every day when you wake up, your mobile phone can remind you that it takes 30 minutes to go from home to the company. This need can be met on the mobile phone before. But the reality may be more complicated, such as traffic jams on the road, and you may need to ride a bike and reserve more time. And if you have the habit of drinking coffee in the morning, you need to buy a cup of coffee nearby. This requires the cloud to analyze based on global information to help users to provide services combinations, and users can activate these services on the mobile phone and other side to achieve seamless connection.
Take common business trip scenarios as an example. In the past, various services were hidden in various apps, buying tickets, taking taxis, booking hotels, checking routes, etc., which required switching and logging back and forth, which caused a lot of inconvenience. But after the integration of end-to-cloud, terminals such as mobile phones will become smarter and smarter. They will actively push them to you at the right time or place, and it may not be pushed to your phone, but may also be smart watches. The efficiency and experience have been subtly improved. In the past, people looked for services and applications, but now they have become services and people.
From the initial capture of user sensing position information, to the user's interactive information going to the cloud, to the cloud making intention judgments, service assembly, and then to the terminal finally judging this service and pushing it to the user, it forms a complete basic technology chain. The importance of the integration of
AI capabilities in the entire chain is also highlighted. Taking OPPO's artificial intelligence assistant Xiaobu as an example, Xiaobu was originally a tool-oriented voice assistant, purely mobile intelligence, and is recognized through multimodals such as voice semantics based on AI model. But after adding cloud and AI capabilities, we have entered global intelligence. In addition to the content entered by users, Xiaobu will also collect other data, such as weather, records opened by the application, etc., to provide more comprehensive services and evolve to proactive suggestions, global intelligence and life assistants.
"The future will definitely be an era based on global intelligence, based on services and data, accessible anywhere, anytime, anywhere." Chen Xiaochun said that this global intelligence experience requires cloudization, and can be finally realized with the advantages of unlimited storage and unlimited computing power in the cloud.

complements the last piece of the underlying technology puzzle
Before the release of Andes Intelligent Cloud, OPPO had released the Mariana chip plan and Pantanal cross-end system. Three plans named after the famous rivers and seas constitute OPPO's core technology system in the future.
At the end of 2019, OPPO founder and CEO Chen Mingyong proposed that the future is a world where all things are integrated, and the necessary condition for achieving the integration of all things is to achieve technological integration. The integration between the
technology systems is already underway. OPPO released its first self-developed chip, Mariana X, in 2021. It is mainly used for image processing and has made many chip-level optimizations for photography and visual scenes.
However, the optimized model is trained in the cloud with a large amount of data and computing power. It is huge in size. To be run on the mobile phone on a large scale, AI needs to be engineered and a lot of tests are required. Self-developed chips and self-built clouds can achieve more agile and deeper collaboration, and tailor-made optimizations are made based on the characteristics of chip itself, such as how to adjust parameters, how to handle certain operators, etc.
Now, with the release of Andes Intelligent Cloud, OPPO has completed three core technologies based on chips, based on multi-end as carriers, and intelligent cloud as brains. "Core and cloud integration, multi-end integration" will bring a revolution in the experience of smart devices.
This is also an inevitable requirement for OPPO to become a more competitive global technology company.
Not long ago, OPPO founder Chen Mingyong also mentioned two original intentions of making chips in an internal speech: one is to provide users with a better experience, and the other is to have their own technical moat.
This is not only the underlying logic of OPPO's chip production, but Andes Intelligent Cloud will also shoulder the same mission in the future.
In fact, the terminal shape is ever-changing, and no one can predict what devices will replace mobile phones in the future. But one thing is clear: no matter how the terminal device evolves, the demand for the cloud remains unchanged. Moreover, as data and content become more and more abundant, the advantages of cloud will be more obvious in the era of integration of everything.
