Infrastructure Engineering software giant Bentley Systems announced the second phase of the infrastructure metaverse at the infrastructure annual conference held in London. This new phase includes enhanced capabilities designed to bridge the gap between information technology (IT), operational technology (OT) and engineering technology (ET) data processing, and significantly improves the handover between infrastructure project design, construction and operational workflow .

Bentley Systems’ vision is to help infrastructure companies grow from using document and file-based workflows to a more flexible, actionable and precise “data-centric” approach. The second phase solution builds on years of experience in Bentley Systems’ iTwin platform, launched in 2018, before Bentley Systems’ planning for seven years.

Bentley Systems CTO Keith Bentley stressed that these enhancements are designed to enhance rather than replace existing tools, engineers can continue to use existing tools, workflow and processes, and then introduce new digital twins, as appropriate.

There is no doubt that Bentley Systems has played an important role in pioneering a number of infrastructure-related developments. First, a new data model for infrastructure digital twins; second, data patterns used to describe infrastructure; third, store all digital twin data on the SQLite database. This is different from other cross-industry digital twins, such as NVIDIA Omniverse, but Bentley Systems is committed to interoperability with gaming platforms such as Omniverse, Epic Unreal, Unity, and industrial meta-universe giants such as Siemens .

Currently, Bentley Systems is launching a number of new features for the iTwin platform to expand the scope and interoperability of infrastructure data:

Among them, iTwin Experience: provides a single management platform for overlaying IT, OT and ET data to help users visualize, query and analyze infrastructure data in their complete context, based on Bentley's achievements in 3D Fast Transfer (3DFT) codecs to transfer 3D data.

In addition, iTwin Capture helps teams automatically capture and analyze realistic data from cameras, lidar sensors, drones and satellite images. This replaces Bentley ContextCapture. It uses advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as neural radiation fields (NeRF) to generate high-quality models based on several photos, and Adobe is currently using this new tool as part of the Adobe Substance 3D tool.
