Optical module itself has undergone the evolution of speed improvement, packaging form changes, access application changes and function improvements. Among them, the Transceiver module of SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) is also called a small package pluggable module, which supports hot plug and unplug and plug-and-play. The SFP speed is getting higher and higher. From 1.25G, 2.5G, 4G, 6G, and after 10Gb/s, the original packaging size is no longer met, so the new standard XFP is defined.

XFP refers to a pluggable optical module with a rate of 10Gb/s. With the improvement of the integration process, XFP can be installed into SFP. This new SFP Transceiver is called SPF+, which is an enhanced SFP module. SFP and SFP+ sizes, but are about 30% smaller than the appearance size of the earlier XFP optical modules. It is defined as SFP connector, with exactly the same function, simplifying design and less power consumption. To distinguish, SFP that supports 8Gb/s and 5G is called SFP+.
