Geforce RTX 4090 was released on October 15th. The powerful performance of the RTX 4090 is amazing, but there are also some problems. Recently, users have reported that the 12VHPWR interface and power supply cable of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card have been overheated and melted. For this phenomenon, GamersNexus tested whether the RTX 4090 power cord would overheat melt for a week and concluded that if the cable was not inserted correctly, or due to foreign matter fragments generated during its manufacturing process, the power cord might overheat melt during use.
Shortly after the GamersNexus test was completed, Nvidia issued an official statement on the problem of overheating and melting of the power cord. Nvidia has now confirmed that the preliminary investigation results based on 50 power cords overheating and melting cases around the world are: when the power cord is inserted incorrectly, the power cord may indeed have a problem of melting. Therefore, Nvidia also recommends that when installing the graphics card, the first thing to do is to ensure that the power cord is inserted firmly and evenly.
GamersNexus pointed out that the total number of RTX 4090 graphics cards sold worldwide is estimated to be 125,000. Although the proportion of 50 power cord melting cases around the world is very low, it has also affected 0.04% of RTX 4090 graphics cards. Nvidia said that for all affected customers, whether they purchase public or non-public graphics cards, they will provide corresponding support services such as return and exchange. Nvidia also provides a picture to illustrate examples of correctly plugging the power cord and incorrectly plugging the power cord. The power cord must be completely inserted into a position where the gap is not visible.
Nvidia is still investigating new cases of overheating and melting of power cords. If your graphics card is affected by this problem, please shut down immediately and unplug the graphics card's power supply, and then contact the relevant merchant for return and exchange. Of course, if you don't encounter any problems, please also check to make sure that the power cord is completely plugged in.
