With little knowledge of what the community means, web3 founders and community managers hired do a terrible job of defining the meaning and operation of the Web3 community. Therefore, the community remains one of the hardest problems in web3.
This article aims to provide a simple definition and classification for the web3 community. It will serve as a beginner for defining and categorizing the web3 community.
What is a community?

There are no hard rules for classifying the web3 community. This is a fairly simple classification for identifying web3 communities, making it easier to see the differences between these communities in a novel way.
This classification provides an easier way to understand the web3 community, thereby helping project founders and community managers plan and create effective community management strategies.
These community types are:

3. Location/location-based community
4. Practice-based community
5. Environment-based community
Interest-based Web3 Community
These community types are formed based on a common interest in a specific topic. These interests are unique, bold, and very clear. Those who identify with these common interests gather together to pull resources to chase them.
In web3, we see that these types of communities are often classified as Social DAOs, Collector DAOs, Impact DAOs, and even Service DAOs. The problem with this classification is that it overlaps and is not very specific.Interest-based communities capture and categorize different types of web3 communities based on their collective interests, not limited to DAOs.
Examples of interest-based web3 communities include:
- Friends with benefits: FWB DAO is a token-gated community dedicated to using Web3 tools to cultivate cultural and creative institutions. Interest is purely to promote culture in web3.

Action-based Web3 Community
This community prototype is combined with the established goals of taking major actions or guiding change. This type of community gathers together to create changes. They gather people under a specific goal to take measurable limited action.
The action-based web3 community is very formal and has a clear course of action. Most communities in the web3 realm are action-based communities. Examples of action-based communities in
web3 are:
- Constitution DAO:Constitution DAO is an experiment for web3 enthusiasts whose common goal is to buy a copy of the U.S. Constitution at Sotheby's auction.
- Klaus House :Klaus House is a web3 community with a mission to buy and operate an NBA team. The goal is to buy and operate a basketball team – a limited and achievable action.
- She256:She256 is a campaign dedicated to increasing diversity and bringing women into the blockchain field. The stated goal is to introduce more women to work in web3. This is an achievable and clear mission authorized by the community.
Location-based Web3 Community
This type of community is brought together by location, geography, and/or ethnicity. Location-based communities include those who identify with the community primarily through location. They are a community of people who are geographically united.
In web3, the location is not limited to IRL (real life) geographical areas. This location can also be on the Internet or in a Metaverse.
Examples of such communities include:

- DAO Brussels: DAO Brussels is another location-based web3 community that supports crypto citizens in Brussels.
Practice-based Web3 Community
This type of community is formed when people from the same major come together to share ideas and resources to promote their professional development. They are sometimes linked under the same profession or by performing the same type of activities.
Practice-based community focuses on managing knowledge to facilitate their practice or career.
Some good examples of the web3 community focused on practice include:
- Talent DAO: Talent DAO is a community of scientists, strategists and researchers that has established a publishing protocol for the social sciences. Their mission is to unlock human potential in a decentralized digital economy by conducting scientific research that helps decentralized autonomous organizations flourish.

Environment-based Web3 Community
This type of community is classified according to certain events or situations that have occurred or are about to occur. This community prototype thrives in the event.
The web3 example of such a community is VeeFriends, an NFT community with thousands of members wanting to attend the VeeCon event, a 3-year event planned by Gary.
