Building structures on soft soil is a difficult task. In this case, the cost of the foundation can be as high as 30-35% of the overall structure cost. Today, one of the ways to increase load-bearing capacity and reduce foundation settlement on high-compressive soils is to use reinforced soils. Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University have proposed a more economical way to reinforce soil on dusty clay and peat surfaces by installing reinforcement elements to build the foundation of steel cylindrical tanks that are used to purify tap water before sedimentation and filtration.
This research published in the Journal of Physics series conference. The foundation reinforcement method in steel tank foundation construction is as follows: tear off the foundation pit, lay a reinforcement layer therein, then pour a cushion layer of sand and gravel mixed soil, and compact one layer. On the other hand, reinforced concrete foundation is erected. This design reduces deformation of the base and ensures its high load-bearing capacity.
To demonstrate the technology and economic efficiency of strengthening soil according to the Institute of Technology method, the cost of building a foundation on a gravel mixture bed treated with asphalt was compared on pile and reinforcement basis.
Before debugging, the steel tank on the reinforced soil pad was hydraulically tested and filled with water. Four geodesized markers were installed along the perimeter of each tank to control vertical motion. Observation on vertical movement of the reservoir foundation lasted for a year.
"Study shows that all the obtained base vertical displacement values did not exceed the maximum allowable standard values. This demonstrates the high stiffness of the base made of reinforced soil and the effectiveness of using such structures in buildings," said Dr. Vladimir Kleveko.
economic efficiency analysis shows that compared with the foundation on the steel bar foundation, the cost of pile foundation is 29%, while the cost of traditional foundation on the sand and gravel mixture bed treated with asphalt is 25%. Using reinforced earth can significantly reduce the cost of building foundations, thereby reducing the cost of the entire building. At present, reinforcing materials have been mass-produced in Russia, and technology can support import substitution.
