On October 9, Southwest University released the latest scientific research results: the National Key Laboratory of Silkworm Genomic Biology team completed large-scale germplasm resource genome analysis of silkworms, drew the silkworm super pan-genome map for the first time in the world, and took the lead in creating a "digital silkworm" gene library, pushing the silkworm gene research into the design and breeding stage in our country.

The previous study of silkworm genes was only a single reference genome and some resequencing data, which was not enough to support the in-depth mining of genomic mutations and excellent genes, especially for molecular breeding. The super pan-genome map of this breakthrough is the sum of all genome information of a species, which is of great significance to deepening functional genome research and germplasm innovation.

According to Tong Xiaoling, professor and doctoral supervisor of the National Key Laboratory of Silkworm Genomic Biology at Southwest University, in order to comprehensively reflect the information of all genomes of mulberry silkworm , the team collected 1,078 different materials (including 205 local species, 194 modified species, 632 genetic materials, and 47 wild mulberry silkworm ). This is the largest sample collection in the three generations of pan-genomes that can be achieved, and can represent the genome information of all groups of the entire silkworm.

It is understood that with this genome map, scientists are like having a complete reference book, and in the future, they will breed and design silkworms in a targeted manner as needed.

Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering pointed out that in the last century, my country's silk industry took the rise of genetics and the discovery of genetics as a breakthrough, which promoted the development of the entire silk industry; and in this century, we have made a breakthrough with the genome, which will form a new 100-year revitalization of the silk industry, as the starting point for scientific and technological support to revitalize the silk industry.
