The clinical trial approved this time is a randomized, double-blind , placebo-controlled Phase II/III clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Azivudine compared with placebo in preventing COVID-19 infection in household close contacts of symptomatic COVID-19 infected persons.
Azivudine tablets are my country’s first oral small molecule COVID-19 treatment drug with completely independent intellectual property rights. It was conditionally approved by the State Food and Drug Administration on July 25, 2022. On August 9, 2022, the General Office of the National Health Commission and the Office of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine included Azivudine Tablets in the "Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Ninth Edition)". On December 7, 2022, it was included in the latest version of Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association Clinical Pharmacy Guidelines for Antiviral Treatment of COVID-19. On December 17, the Henan Pharmaceutical Association released the "Henan Pharmaceutical Expert Consensus on Azivudine for the Treatment of New Coronavirus Pneumonia". Azivudine Phase III clinical trial results for the treatment of COVID-19 infection show that Azivudine has the effect of inhibiting the replication of COVID-19, accelerating the clearance of COVID-19, alleviating symptoms and shortening the course of the disease. Low dosage is safer. Moreover, because the target SARS-CoV-2 RdRp is relatively conserved and has a low mutation rate, Azivudine has the potential to be effective against multiple variants.
