Comrade Ma Jianzhang was born in Fuxin, Liaoning Province in July 1937. He joined the Communist Party of China on June 21, 1956. He graduated from the Forestry Department of Northeast Forestry University in 1960 and served successively as deputy director of the Forestry Department, director of the Department of Wildlife, dean of the College of Wildlife Resources, and honorary dean of the College of Wildlife and Nature Reserves. In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has served as the executive director and chairman of academic groups such as the Chinese Zoological Society, Heilongjiang Zoological Society, and the China Wildlife Conservation Association, and has served as a consultant for many international organizations such as the UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Academician Ma Jianzhang is the founder of my country's wildlife protection and utilization discipline and wildlife management higher education. He founded my country's earliest wildlife protection and utilization major and my country's only wildlife and nature reserve college, and has trained a large number of senior talents in the field of wildlife management. The management policy of "strengthening resource protection, active domestication and breeding, and rational management and utilization" that he first put forward based on national conditions has become the theoretical and legal basis for wildlife protection in my country.
