In May 2022, a small cube satellite equipped with a teraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) was launched into an orbit 480 kilometers away from the earth. Since then, TBIRD has transmitted terabytes of data through an optical communication link with a terrestrial receiver in California at rates up to 100G per second. This data rate is more than 1,000 times higher than the RF links traditionally used for satellite communications, and is also the highest data rate that a laser link from space to ground can achieve.
