Douglas Richard Hofstadter, February 15, 1945-), Chinese name Hou Shida, is an American scholar and writer. His major research areas include consciousness, analogy, artistic creation, literary translation, and mathematical and physics exploration.
Hou Shida was born in New York City, USA. His father is the physicist Robert Hofstadt, the winner of the Nobel Prize in and is a professor at Stanford University. Hou Shida grew up on the university campus and attended Geneva International School from 1958 to 1959.
