Recently, Professor He Zhenyu's research team of Beijing University of Science and Technology discovered charred wood geological remains in Changyu Dongtian . These carbonized woods are distributed sporadically in the breccia tuff in Changyu Dongtian, with a diameter of generally 1 to 5 cm. In some cases, the diameter is more than 10 cm and the length is generally several centimeters or dozens of cm.

Research team observed its microstructure by magnifying 2400 times under high-resolution scanning electron microscope , confirming that the carbonized wood currently found is the cypress plant Kauri (Aaruga) genus, and proposed that the southeastern coastal areas of China in the late Cretaceous period may have a warm and humid subtropical climate environment, and develop coastal mountains with towering terrain.

This is the first time that has been discovered in well-preserved charred wood fossils in Cretaceous volcanic rocks along the southeastern coast of China. The long-term quarrying activity in Changyu Dongtian provides unique conditions for the disclosure and discovery of charred wood. This study and discovery provide an important basis for revealing the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate of the Cretaceous period in the southeastern coast of China, as well as the impact of huge volcanic eruptions on the environment and climate.
Popular science time
Cretaceous period (English: Cretaceous Period) is the last period of the Mesozoic era in the geological age. began in 145 million years ago, ended in 66 million years ago, and went through 79 million years. It is the longest stage of Phaeozoic .
During the Cretaceous period, the continent was separated by the ocean and the earth became warm and drought. The Cretaceous period was also the largest dinosaurs. Many new dinosaur species began to appear. Dinosaurs still dominate the landing, pterosaurs glided in the sky, and huge marine reptiles ruled the shallow sea. The earliest snakes , moths, bees and many new small mammals also appeared. Angiosperms also appeared during this period.
