1953, after graduation, Liu Baojun was assigned to the Northwest to look for minerals. He slept in the wild all year round. His living and working conditions were extremely difficult, and the water everyone drank was bitter. He later recalled: "I didn't think about how bad the conditions were, I just felt that my motherland needed me." In the early 1960s, the research on sedimentary theory entered a new stage of development. Liu Baojun took the initiative to introduce this discipline into China and translated many professional works, becoming a pioneer in introducing cutting-edge international sedimentary theory into my country's academic circles.

1971, Liu Baojun led a team to Yunnan Dianzhong Sandstone Copper Mine to carry out geological prospecting work. After many days of investigation, he bravely questioned the results of the mineralization paleoenvironment and the causes of ore deposits formed based on experience. In order to prove his opinion, he went out for field visits during the day and consulted domestic and foreign information at night.Based on collecting multiple ores, studying ore composition, and mastering first-hand information on , new ideas on the paleoenological environment and the conclusions of the ore deposits are proposed. This new theory was quickly promoted nationwide, and played a great role in the detection of lead, zinc, uranium and other minerals.

"Sedimentary Petology" edited by him has become a pioneering monograph on geological sedimentary in China. It is of great significance to many industries such as geology, petroleum, coal, metallurgy, etc. It is still one of the classic textbooks for the cultivation of sedimentary talents. He led the most systematic and detailed lithophago paleogeographic map collection in southern my country to date, and is praised by foreign scholars as the culmination of lithophago paleogeographic research.

After entering the 1990s, he guided domestic sedimentary geologists to place research on global changes in an important position and became a leader in my country's deep participation in international global sedimentary geology research.
