On October 11, the Hubei Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment held a press conference to introduce the pilot phased results of the Hubei Provincial Biodiversity Background Survey Observation and Evaluation Pilot. The reporter learned that As of the end of September 2022, Hubei Province has discovered 7 new fish species, 2 new insect species, large fungi, 5 new Chinese new record species, and 6 new plant record species.
In March 2021, the Hubei Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment launched the pilot work of biodiversity background survey, observation and evaluation. Investigation, observation and evaluation are carried out on ecosystem types, terrestrial higher plants, terrestrial vertebrates , insects, freshwater aquatic organisms , large fungi and traditional knowledge related to biodiversity, including all survey contents of the "Technical Regulations on Investigation and Assessment of County Biodiversity".
The head of the Natural Ecological Protection Department of the Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment introduced that the investigation was detailed. As of the end of September 2022, a total of 280 higher plant sample lines were investigated, more than 10,000 plant samples were collected, and more than 15,000 plant photos were taken; 3,626 terrestrial vertebrate sample lines were investigated; 1,296 insect sample lines were investigated; 114 large fungal grids, 142 sample lines were investigated, and 772 samples were collected; 71 fish samples were collected in river sections, and 79 biological samples of benthic animals, and plankton (including peri-cluster algae) were collected. There are abundant species recorded, and more than 42,000 vascular bundles were recorded. Two suspected new species were found, namely one Impotence and one Crabbit genus plant. Six new species were found in Hubei, and new distribution points of yellow plum scale hammer trees were found; 303 birds; 44 animals; 67 amphibians and reptiles, 3 national second-level key protected species, 17 key protected animals in Hubei Province; 644 insects; 381 large fungi; 100 fish, 278 benthic animals, 441 plankton, and 4375 taxa units of the pericon algae.
This survey has achieved fruitful results. In terms of new species discovery, 7 new species of fish were found, mainly collected from Shennongjia Forest Area, Badong County and Yichang City ; 2 new species of insects were found: strange ladybugs and Chinese thin-waisted rotten wood armor, collected from Shennongjia Forest Area; 5 new Chinese record species were found in large fungi; 6 new species of plant record species were found, namely Zhejiang Impotence (Impotence Family), Magnolia Leaf Heather ( Rosaceae ), Geloabl Eucalyptus Leaf (Rose Family), Mustard Leaf Dandelion ( Asteraceae ), Swelling Fruit Sedge ( Sedge ), and Tremendous Tiger Ear ( Tiger Earaceae ).
Relevant person in charge of the Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment said that the pilot project of biodiversity background survey, observation and evaluation has laid the foundation for strengthening biodiversity protection, guiding the rational development and utilization of biological resources, and also provided technical support for the ten-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River. In the next step, the Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment will study and issue the "Implementation Opinions on Further Strengthening Biodiversity Protection in Hubei Province". By the end of April 2023, the field survey work in seven pilot areas will be fully completed, the first batch of biological species lists and biodiversity red lists in Hubei will be released, and the provincial biodiversity database will be established; at the same time, supervision will be carried out in key areas such as ecological protection red line , nature reserves and biodiversity.
