Every autumn and winter, migratory birds migrating from the north will come to the coastal wetlands such as Chongming Dongtan, Hengsha Dongtan, Jiuduansha , Nanhui Dongtan and other coastal tidal flats in Shanghai, overwinter, replenish food or accumulate energy, and then continue to fly to the warm south.
In early September, the Shanghai Forestry Station sent personnel to Hengsha Dongtan to carry out the 8th water bird monitoring survey in 2022, and a total of 76 species of wild birds were recorded, totaling 3,288 times. This survey recorded seven types of national second-class protected wild animals, including broad-billed sniper , black-winged kite , white-bellied harrier , osprey, Zhendan Crown , Little Crown , as well as a variety of wild water birds included in the national "three-have" protected wild animals.

As an international metropolis, Shanghai is also home to many birds. It is located in the middle of the East Asia-Australian water bird migration route and is one of the important places for bird migration and rest. Shanghai's vast mudflat wetlands provide a place for water birds such as pissels to live and feed, and because of its unique geographical location, it is also one of the important forest bird migration channels.
At present, there are 40 forest bird and water bird monitoring sites in Shanghai, and more than 300 species of wild birds can be recorded through monitoring and investigation every year.
