Wang Cheng is the director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Yangling Demonstration Zone Hospital. Recently, he has led his team on the front line of treating patients infected with the new coronavirus. Today, we walked into the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine to learn about their stories.
The hospital has newly opened beds to treat patients infected with the new coronavirus
On the afternoon of December 30, 2022, in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Yangling Demonstration Zone Hospital, patients and medical staff were undergoing a major migration. Wang Cheng, director of the department, said, "There have been a lot of patients infected with the new coronavirus recently, especially elderly patients with underlying diseases. In addition, it is the season of high incidence of respiratory diseases, so there are many patients and the pressure on hospitalization is very high. In order to meet the medical needs of local patients, the hospital has opened a new ward to treat critically ill patients with new coronavirus infection, and has set up more than 40 new intensive care units. There are hospital beds and more than 30 general beds. The existing ward has been set aside to receive patients with mild COVID-19 infection. At present, we have more than 120 beds that can treat patients with COVID-19 infection."
Wang Cheng said that all of the 8 doctors and 17 nurses in the respiratory and critical care medicine department have been infected and are now on duty. The hospital also transferred 4 doctors and 4 nurses from other departments to provide support. Currently, the department has admitted 42 patients, 36 of whom are patients infected with the new coronavirus. Most of them are elderly and have underlying diseases, and many of them are prone to severe or critical illness.
"Currently, the hospital's treatment refers to the new coronavirus infection treatment manual of Peking Union Medical College Hospital , which is very operable. We have organized multiple in-department trainings, and the hospital has also established a new coronavirus infection treatment expert group. For critically ill patients, they will discuss and decide on the diagnosis and treatment plan. In terms of preparations, the hospital is currently ready to treat severe patients with new coronavirus infection in the region." Wang Cheng said.
Career happiness is the driving force for progress
According to reports, after Wang Cheng graduated from Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine in 2000, he came to Yangling Demonstration Zone Hospital to work. "When I first came here, the hospital had only four floors, more than 200 employees, and more than 60 beds. After more than 20 years of development, the hospital now has more than 1,000 employees and more than 800 open beds, and its ability to treat critically ill patients has been significantly improved. Since the establishment of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine in 2015, with the strong support of the hospital, through cultivating talents The team and strengthened discipline construction have greatly improved the medical service capabilities and levels of the discipline. In 2019, the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine became the second batch of provincial key clinical specialty construction projects. In December of the same year, it was awarded the National PCCM Department Standardized Construction Tertiary Hospital Standard Unit, and successfully passed the mid-term review in May 2022. " Wang Cheng said.
As for the reason why the department has developed rapidly in recent years, Wang Cheng believes that, in a big way, it is due to the support of policies and the attention of successive leaders of the hospital. In terms of departments, it mainly benefits from the inheritance of the spirit of excellence and unremitting pursuit of the older generation of medical staff. Not all doctors can become famous experts, but every doctor must strive to become an excellent doctor who can meet the needs of the local people. Secondly, the department has an excellent team. Everyone thinks together, works hard together, and can work together around the goals and directions set by the department.
"We have been under great pressure recently, but all staff do not need to be mobilized. Everyone is thinking about the patients. Whenever we treat a patient, the joy cannot be expressed in words. Professional happiness is the driving force for us all to move forward together." Wang Cheng said.
Having been a doctor for more than 20 years, Wang Cheng has many moments that he will never forget. Some of them are painful, and most of them are joyful. He said that as a doctor, it is very important to communicate well between doctors and patients, and we must strive to gain the full trust of patients and their families. "Over the years, I have treated many elderly people, and some patients have particularly complicated basic diseases. Despite the best efforts of the hospital and the best efforts of their families, the patients still left. However, many of the family members have now become friends with me. The profession of doctor is sacred, and we should be worthy of the trust of family members and patients, and consider the patients wholeheartedly. It is impossible for a doctor to successfully treat every patient, but when you lie in bed every night, if you look back and think about it, it will be considered a success. "Wang Cheng said.
