Yesterday China Pharmaceutical announced that it has become the import and distribution of Pfizer new crown special drug Paxlovid in mainland China. stock instantly hit the daily limit . Today is another one-character board. Those who sold without understanding the situation are probably too late to regret it.
So why did Chinese medicine introduce Paxlovid, what exactly does Pfizer's new drug and vaccine have, how much protection does it provide, and how many deaths have been reduced?
This may be a problem that many people are concerned about but still can’t understand. This article only lists some research data I found. Please judge the specific efficiency by yourself.
vaccine effectiveness
According to a study published by Yale University on December 13, the United States has received the first dose of the vaccine on December 12, 2020, and as of November 30 this year, a total of 655 million doses have been administered in two years, and 80% of people have received at least one dose.
The mRNA vaccines of Pfizer and Modner are mainly vaccinated against in the United States.
This study combines age-stripped demographics, risk factors, and infection and vaccination dynamics data, using computer models of disease transmission to assess the number of infections and deaths avoided in the United States over the past two years, and compared the observed pandemic trajectory with virtual scenarios without vaccination programs.
results show that vaccination in the United States avoided more than 18.5 million additional hospitalizations, 3.256 million additional deaths, and saved $1.15 trillion in medical expenses.
From December 12, 2020 to the present, a total of 82 million people have been reported to have been infected, 4.8 million people have been hospitalized and 798,000 people have died. In other words, if the vaccine is not vaccinated, the number of infections in the United States will increase by 1.5 times to 120 million, the number of hospitalizations will increase by 3.8 times and the number of deaths will increase by 4.1 times.
Paxlovid's effectiveness
Paxlovid was approved for emergency use on December 22, 2021, and it has been almost a year since now. I have found three studies on the effectiveness of Paxlovid in the real world.
- First study
This is an article published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website on December 2, from a study led by Melissa Shah, one of the U.S. Medical Systems. The data from the study comes from information from 160 million people in the U.S. medical system.
Researchers found that between April 1 and August 31, 2022, a total of 1.71 million people over 18 years old in the system were diagnosed with the new coronavirus, and a total of 700,000 people (accounting for 40.9%) were included in the treatment scope of Paxlovi, of which nearly 200,000 people received Paxlovid treatment within 5 days of diagnosis and 500,000 people did not receive treatment.
Results found that among the patients treated with Paxlovid, a total of 29 deaths were killed, accounting for 0.01%, while those who did not accept it were 182, accounting for 0.04%, which means that the risk of death was reduced by about 2.5 times.
Conditions for receiving treatment: 1. Test positive; 2. Consistent with mild to moderate symptoms; 3. Symptoms occur within the past 5 days; 4. Age older than 18 years old; 5. At least one risk factor for progressing to severe symptoms; 6. No serious renal or liver damage; 7. No significant response to the Paxlovid component; 8. No contraindications.
- Second study
A total of 12,541 people received treatment from Paxlovid, and 69 people developed severe hospitalization or death, accounting for about 0.55%.
Among the 32,010 people who did not use Paxlovid treatment, 310 developed severe hospitalization or death, accounting for 0.97%.
researchers say that less than 15% of high-risk patients are currently using Paxlovid, and it is expected that Paxlovid will play a greater role in the future, because in the United States, there are no longer any monoclonal antibody therapies that can fight the popular Omickron strain .
- Third study
On September 1 this year, several experts from Clalit Health Services, a large medical service provider in Israel, published a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that reviewed medical records from the system from January 9 to March 31 this year, which covers 52% of Israel's population and two-thirds of the elderly. During
, a total of 1.1 million people in the system were infected with the Omickron variant, of which 110,000 patients were over 40 years old, with an average age of 60 years old, considered at risk, and 3,900 people received Paxlovid treatment.
Among the 42,821 patients aged 65 and older, 766 patients who did not receive Paxlovid treatment were hospitalized, and only 11 patients who received Paxlovid were hospitalized, and the risk of was relatively reduced by 73% .
,484 patients who received treatment died, while 158 of 40,337 patients who did not receive treatment died, has a 79% reduction in risk of .
But this study also shows that Paxlovid has little effect on hospitalization and mortality among young people, whose mortality rates are as low as those of older patients receiving treatment.
Based on the above studies, Paxlovid has a good effect on moderate to mild patients who may be converted to hospitalization risk.
But there is currently no study on how many deaths have been reduced in a certain country, and Israel's is probably the closest one, because the system covers more than half of Israel's population.
April 22 this year WHO also strongly recommended to use Paxlovid for mild and moderate COVID-19 patients with the highest risk of hospitalization, saying that it is the best treatment option for high-risk patients so far .
my country has approved the import registration of Paxlovid on February 11 this year and included it in the medical insurance .
Now China Pharmaceutical has announced that it has signed an agreement with Pfizer to be responsible for the import and distribution of the drug in mainland China. This means that the country is stepping up its preparations for the Omickron pandemic on the basis of coordinating the overall situation. builds a life-saving line for high-risk patients to protect lives.
Of course, most people do not need to use this drug. You can compare the above 8 conditions to see if you meet it. If
does not meet, congratulations, even if you are infected, you may basically not have any risk of severe illness.
