The risks behind "breast development" for men
48-year-old Li Lin (pseudonym) never thought that being a man would also be related to breast cancer. In April this year, ultrasound examination found a 1.6×1.7 cm mass under his right breast. The puncture pathology was confirmed to be breast cancer and lymph node metastasis had occurred.
This is a case on the "See you on Wednesday" platform initiated by Professor Liao Ning. "Recently, several male breast cancer patients have been admitted continuously. They all ignore the attention to breasts. Even if nodules and lumps occur, they don't care about it. They are already in the middle and late stages when the diagnosis is confirmed." Professor Liao Ning pointed out that the incidence of breast cancer in men is about 1%, and there has been an upward trend in recent years, which is mainly related to factors such as drug use, alcoholism, diabetes , and increased obesity. Because it is rare in clinical practice, it is also easy to miss diagnosis.
It is worth noting that more than half of male breast cancer is associated with breast development. "Male breast development is not a disease in itself, but once it occurs, it will increase the risk of breast cancer and need to be vigilant."
According to reports, in the overall population, 30% of adult men will develop breasts. There are many factors in male breast development, including congenital chromosomal abnormalities, taking medications, and having certain diseases that cause estrogen levels to increase, which can increase the risk of cancer.
Men with congenital vasal hypoplasia have a 20-50-fold higher incidence of breast cancer than normal men. Special attention should be paid to the health of breast cancer, and even prophylactic surgery is required if necessary.
Patients with liver impairment, such as chronic alcohol cirrhosis and schistosomiasis, the liver reduces the inactivation of estrogen in the body, and the increase in the relative estrogen levels will increase the risk of breast cancer in this type of male.
In male patients with diabetes, the aromatization reaction of peripheral blood androgens increases, leading to an increase in estrogen in the blood and the risk of breast cancer will also double.
In addition, studies have shown that 20% of male breast cancer patients, first-degree female family members (mother or sister) have a history of breast cancer.
Occupational environment and lifestyle are also important factors in the occurrence of breast cancer in men. The study found that men have a significantly increased risk of breast cancer when exposed to high temperatures, car exhaust and tobacco environments. Alcoholism is also associated with male breast cancer. A Denmark study of more than 10,000 men found that drinking more than 90 grams per day was 6 times higher than the control group with a daily alcohol consumption of less than 15 grams per day.
How to deal with breast nodules
Professor Liao Ning reminds that male physical examination items do not include breast ultrasound.
