New Year's Eve is like Marmite, people either love it or they hate it.
However, for those with social anxiety disorder, this can be particularly difficult because of the pressure to interact with others.
Being in a public place with a group of people can make you worry about what you will say to others and that you will make a fool of yourself.
This is actually a physiological reaction in your body, but it is usually caused by your thoughts and mental state.
The key to freeing yourself from anxiety is to learn ways to have a more positive impact on your thoughts, which is a bit like having a superpower.
This experience can be personal because your thoughts are internal.
So you don't have to tell anyone what you are thinking or how you think.
This can really work in your favor because you can actively use your mind to reduce feelings of anxiety.
Here are three steps to defeat anxiety:
1: Listen to your “superpower inner voice”
We listen to our inner thoughts through inner conversations and conversations. What we hear or say in this private space affects how we feel in our body. Use your inner voice to help you feel calm, secure, in control and less anxious.
Try this now...
Hear your inner voice saying "I am at peace". Repeat three times slowly and clearly.
Turn up the volume of your inner voice so you can hear your thoughts in a calm and reassuring tone.
You can also try to say, I am in control, I can relax, I am confident.
Really listen and feel these words, and experience how your thoughts can help you quickly transform your inner feelings.
You can use your inner voice anytime, anywhere without anyone knowing what you are saying to yourself.
2: Do some "body double visualization"
For many people, their inner thoughts will be very visual, with lots of images or even mental movies that they watch and see within their brain space. Visualization can again help you improve your mental state and reduce anxious thoughts or feelings.
Try this now...
Imagine a confident self. Think about how you will stand, how you will walk, how you will talk, what you will wear, how you will dance. Add any further details.
Imagine this confident avatar standing in front of you. Then take a few more minutes to build a confident you. Make it vivid, real and colorful.
When you begin to feel your body's confidence double, mentally step into this body and feel this confidence flowing through your body.
At any time, you can imagine this ideal version of yourself that you want and then mentally step into that version to achieve a state of confidence.
3: Combining the Two in Dance
Now, let’s combine your inner voice with your imagination and rehearse a confident version of yourself in your head at the New Year’s party.
Try this now...
Hear the music in your heart, see yourself dancing, hear your inner voice saying, I can do this, I can let go and enjoy myself.
Keep watching yourself dance, have fun and be free.
Change your thoughts away from anything that could go wrong and the anxiety it makes you feel, to fun and joy.
Keep repeating this, and the more you do it, the more it will help you improve how you feel inside.
Tip: Remember, everything starts with your thoughts. Developing a confident and calm mind can improve your New Year and daily life.
