More than ten years ago, the occasional supervision had already put a lot of pressure on me. More than ten years later, when I became the supervisor of , when I looked back, supervision has become a history that people can constantly recall. Like personal experience, supervision is also one of the pillars of psychological counselor growth.

Competency Model defines supervision as: "Supervision is an intervention conducted by a senior professional to a more junior professional. This intervention is evaluable and sustainable. In this process, supervision also has the ability to enhance the professional function of the supervisor, monitors the quality of the professional services it provides to the visitors, and serves as a gatekeeper for those practitioners who are ready to enter a specific career field (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019).

In other words, supervision is an intervention process. In this process, the supervisor will mainly focus on three aspects (i.e. knowledge, skills and attitudes, mainly ethics) to help the consultant. In this process, the role of supervisor includes the role of instructor, evaluator, monitor, and industry gatekeeper.

As a beginner, what preparations do you need to make for supervision? What can you get from supervision?

1

Be prepared for supervision

.Be prepared for evaluation

Supervisor is considered the gatekeeper of the industry. Although in the current country, supervisors do not have that much power. But the evaluation of consultants is still one of the core contents of their work. That is, the purpose of supervision is to ensure the basic qualities and abilities of practitioners in the consulting industry.

From this perspective, the supervisor sometimes has the role of a teacher, and the supervision process is therefore considered a process of continuous evaluation of the supervisor. And this will put obvious pressure on the supervisor. evaluation is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, evaluating the competence of the supervisor will put pressure on the counselor; on the other hand, this is also the basis for improving clinical skills of psychological counseling.

. Writing a word-by-word draft of the case report

Generally speaking, preparing a case report and some word-by-word drafts are necessary preparations required to enter supervision. The format of the case report varies from supervisor to supervisor. Most supervisors have their own preference for case reporting formats and will discuss with the supervisor during the first supervision.

In terms of the requirements for word-by-word drafts, all word-by-word drafts, some word-by-word drafts, or oral reports are all choices. Different supervisors will have different requirements for the supervisor.

Generally speaking, some word-by-word manuscripts are a more common form, that is, a consultant selects a consulting process (for example, 10-20 minutes) and transcribing them into word-by-word manuscripts. For discussion during supervision. Writing a case report is a necessary skill for a consultant. This is an important path for the consultant to conceptualize ability training in cases, and it is also an important factor in helping the supervisor understand the actual situation of your work. With the help of these materials, the supervisor can better discover your strengths and problems with you. Promote the growth of consultants faster.

. Form a clearer supervision target

Although the overall supervision target is usually to help yourself improve your case conceptualization ability, enhance your psychological clinical work skills, etc. However, each supervision will have some more specific goals. For example, what are the characteristics of the case that I hope to enhance my understanding? What are the confusions in this time or these consultations?

2

Fully utilize the supervisor

. With the help of supervision to enrich the knowledge reserve of psychological clinical work

Every visitor will be a treasure waiting for the counselor to dig out, and each consultation process will be an opportunity to help us refresh our understanding of human nature. Supervisors are often better than those of the supervisor in their knowledge reserves; on the other hand, supervisors are more likely to help the supervisor see and understand the knowledge required by the visitor. These factors can help the supervised persons read, study, and reduce the possibility of detours in a targeted manner.

. Use supervision to promote the transformation of clinical knowledge to clinical skills

Theoretical knowledge is often more general, while the client is special. Every visitor will have his own story and explain the logic of the theory from different angles. For example, the performance of Odipus may be manifested as contradictory entanglement, serious attack, or individual avoidance of success or victory...

In short, every theoretical concept may be expressed in thousands of clinical reality. Supervisors are the key to promoting us to quickly break through this bottleneck.

. Use supervision to improve ethical sensitivity

Ethics is the cornerstone of the psychological counseling industry. The ethics in psychological counseling are not moral laws, but more of a summary of experience. In other words, behind ethical regulations are often many bloody lessons and a summary of the mistakes made by predecessors.

As a consultant, in order to avoid visiting or the consultant himself being subjected to some unnecessary harm. We need to develop a sense of ethics and avoid various hidden dangers as much as possible. Supervisors establish a sensitive ethical awareness and avoid risks in professional activities as much as possible.

. With the help of supervision, enhance professional identity

Supervisors usually have a better understanding of the current situation of the industry and have more practical experience in the future of career development. These will provide a reference framework for new consultants. Not every consultant is suitable or willing to engage in the consulting profession.

Supervision activities will gradually sort out the personal characteristics, abilities and attitude characteristics of the consultation volume. These factors will, on the one hand, enhance the personal growth of the supervisor, and on the other hand, help the supervisor enhance his or her professional recognition. Therefore, with the help of the supervision relationship, the supervisor is also understanding and experiencing the existence and inherent rules of the psychological counseling industry. These contents will be the cornerstone of the development of the professional identity of the supervisor.

. Promote personal growth with the help of supervision

Personal growth is not the main goal of the supervision process. Most personal growth-related content is mainly completed through the personal experience process. However, during the consultation process, the personal characteristics of the consultant are an important factor affecting the consultation process.

Therefore, personal traits that may have an impact on the consulting process will also be discussed during the supervision process. Of course, the scope of the discussion is obviously limited than that of personal experience. These discussions will focus primarily on topics related to case processes. Generally speaking, there is no excessive discussion of the individual supervised person in supervision.
