In life, I often hear people around me complain about life and work, and are very dissatisfied with my current situation, but if I advise them to change, the other party will say, "I have no choice, I have no other choice." Is there really no choice for

?

is not, they are just afraid of change and unwilling to change.

This is actually related to path dependence in psychology.

Simply put, once a person chooses a certain path, he will become dependent on this path. When facing a choice in the future, it is easy to continue to fall into it and go all the way to the end, which is difficult to change. As Paul David said: Once a certain choice is made, it is like embarking on a path of no return. The power of inertia will make this choice constantly strengthen itself.

For example, someone studies marketing in college, and then goes to sales after graduation. After three years of sales, I suddenly wanted to change my career, but I found that I knew nothing about other industries. Considering that changing careers would start from the grassroots level, with low salary and tired people, I still started my old sales career.

One of the reasons why people are so dependent on the path they choose is that you taste the sweetness and get positive feedback.

For example, if you do something familiar, the probability of making mistakes will be relatively small. Others keep praising you for your meticulous work and think that you are a reliable person in your work. This will give you a sense of accomplishment. At the same time, in order to maintain your image in the eyes of others, you will always do what you are good at and do not want to change.

Another reason is:

Although you are dissatisfied, this current situation is a familiar situation. You have already developed your own set of ways of dealing with it. If it changes, it means you have to enter an unfamiliar field, which makes you feel insecure and you don’t know how to deal with it.

It can be seen from this that there is path dependence, and its essence is that it is actually unwilling to bear the possible results of changes. For example:

will cause others to have bad comments on you and will be frustrated in their hearts;

is worried that there will be many unknown situations, which will make it difficult for them to deal with them, and face greater pain.

But if you feel that you should not live like this and often blame yourself for it, then you must realize your dependence and understand:

Over-reliance on a certain path for a long time may make you constantly improve in the field you are good at, but it will also make your life choices too limited and kill other possibilities.

For this, I will give you three suggestions, try to break through the psychological constraints of path dependence.

01

Reduce your fear of results and be mentally prepared to deal with failure.

The future is bright and the road is tortuous.

In the process of exploring new paths, it is inevitable that you may encounter failures, but this is no big deal. Although you fail, you gain experience and have a new direction. From this point of view, failure is not terrible.

When you are not afraid of failure, what else is there to be scary?

02

maintain a long-term vision.

Although breaking the old path and establishing a new path may lose the competitive advantage you have gained, it will also increase the cost incurred by exploring the new path.

But in the long run, maybe you gain more than you lose now.

When faced with a choice, you can calculate yourself whether such a choice will be beneficial to you in three or five years. If you are sure it is beneficial, do it boldly, so that you can fight for more possibilities and greater benefits for yourself.

widely explored to improve cognition.

path dependence is often used to solve new problems based on past experience. This is affected by human inertial choices, but in fact this method may not necessarily help you solve problems.

When you can explore widely, read more books, communicate with experts more, put yourself in an open environment, constantly improve your cognition and vision, find new solutions as much as possible, and explore new ideas, you will not age and rely on inherent methods to solve problems.
