According to reports, on December 27, Tsai Ing-wen announced that from January 1, 2024, compulsory military service in Taiwan will be extended from the original four months to one year. Tsai Ing-wen's decision has attracted great attention on the island, and many politicians have accused the DPP authorities of pushing the Taiwanese people into a more dangerous situation.

The reason why the Democratic Progressive Party authorities decided to extend military service has a lot to do with its basic line of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan". At the same time, the United States is indispensable for fanning the flames behind the scenes. However, the results of the "nine-in-one" election on the island have proven that the DPP's line of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan" goes against the mainstream public opinion of the people on the island seeking peace.

However, the DPP authorities are still stubborn. They not only continue to advocate "resisting China and protecting Taiwan", but also attempt to extend military service to "reject reunification with force." However, the Taiwan authorities need to be reminded that the gap in military strength between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is getting wider and wider. This fact cannot be changed regardless of whether the Taiwan military extends its military service.

Recently, in order to deter the United States from colluding with Taiwan, the People's Liberation Army also held joint exercises in the Taiwan Strait. According to a report issued by Taiwan's defense department, from 6:00 on December 25 to 6:00 on December 26, the People's Liberation Army dispatched a total of 71 military aircraft to operate in the Taiwan Strait, 47 of which crossed the so-called "central line of the strait."

This is the largest number of military aircraft dispatched by the People's Liberation Army in the Taiwan Strait at one time this year, but the Taiwan military still has no response. Facts have proved that in the face of the People's Liberation Army's powerful deterrent, the Taiwan military knows very well that it is unable to resist. Therefore, the Taiwan authorities' attempt to "reject reunification with force" is completely seeking a dead end.

Although the mainland has been working hard to promote peaceful reunification, it will never give up its right to use force. The current actions of the Taiwan authorities are all intensifying the cross-strait situation, which will only further increase the possibility of cross-strait conflict. But once a cross-strait conflict breaks out, the Taiwan military will be powerless to resist.

In fact, many experts on the island also know this. Therefore, in recent times, many politicians and retired generals on the island have expressed dissatisfaction with the cross-strait policies of the DPP authorities. Recently, Taiwan retreat general Huang Zhenghui also publicly called for peaceful cross-strait reunification.

It is reported that Huang Zhenghui was a colonel in the Taiwan Navy before retiring. Therefore, he has a relatively good understanding of the gap in military strength between the two sides. He believes that for the future of Taiwan, the Taiwan authorities should choose to negotiate with the mainland to achieve peaceful cross-strait reunification and establish a "Taiwan Special Administrative Region."

However, Huang Zhenghui pointed out that while completing peaceful reunification, the mainland needs to agree to two conditions. One is to retain the existing social system on the island, and the other is to retain the Taiwan military. Huang Zhenghui believes that if peaceful reunification can be achieved, the people on the island will not have to worry about falling into war, and both sides of the Taiwan Strait can develop the economy together.

Moreover, if the mainland agrees to the above two conditions to complete peaceful reunification, Taiwan will not have to pay anything at all. In addition, once the mainland reneges, the retained Taiwan troops can also be used for self-protection. In fact, Huang Zhenghui's proposal is theoretically feasible. After all, the mainland has always pursued peaceful reunification.

As for the two conditions he proposed, there is no problem in retaining the existing social system on the island. This is also one of the core contents of " one country, two systems ". But it is unlikely to retain the Taiwan military. The People's Liberation Army currently has enough strength to defend national sovereignty. After the reunification is completed, the People's Liberation Army should naturally take over the island's defense.

In fact, if it were decades ago, the mainland would have probably agreed to Huang Zhenghui's request, and the conditions proposed by the mainland at that time were even more relaxed. But times have changed, and now the mainland has fully grasped the initiative for reunification and cannot allow Taiwan to impose conditions.

Of course, if the Taiwan authorities can completely give up "seeking independence" and proactively seek reunification, everything can be discussed. What the Taiwan authorities need to understand is that cross-strait reunification is a general trend and a historical necessity. Whatever the means, unification will be accomplished.

If the Taiwan authorities wake up in time and proactively seek reunification, then the two sides of the Taiwan Strait can be reunified as soon as possible, and the people on the island can live a good life as soon as possible. But if the Taiwan authorities remain stubborn and continue to "reject reunification with force," the result will be a dead end.

In recent times, many politicians and experts on the island have realized the importance of peaceful cross-strait reunification. Many people of insight have suggested that the Taiwan authorities negotiate peace with the mainland and accept peaceful reunification. I hope the Taiwan authorities will take care of themselves and not ask for trouble.
