The latest data released by the Canadian Immigration Service shows that while the number of applications has decreased, the number of applications that have been approved has reached a record high.
Since August 2022, the overall number of Canadian immigration applicants has decreased by nearly 500,000. At the same time, as of the end of November, Canada had processed approximately 4.8 million applications, which was almost double the same period last year.
This progress comes as Canada is also on track to welcome a record 431,000 new permanent residents by the end of 2022.
Temporary residence applications:
Data shows that the most processed applications this year are temporary residence applications.
In 2022, Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Services processed nearly 700,000 work permits, compared with approximately 223,000 in the same period in 2019.
In addition, the Immigration Bureau also processed 670,000 study permit applications in 2022, while 500,000 study permit applications were processed in the same period in 2021. Currently, most study permit applications can be processed within 60 days.
Permanent residence application:
In terms of permanent residence application, data shows that Canada has welcomed 414,000 new immigrants, compared with 362,000 in the same period last year.
Canada finally welcomed more than 405,000 new permanent residents in 2021. In 2022, Canada is expected to continue to break this record and achieve the goal of welcoming more than 431,000 new immigrants.
Citizenship application:
Between April and November 2022, Canada also welcomed approximately 251,000 new citizens, exceeding the total number of new Canadian citizens in the previous year. Immigration Canada expects the number of new citizens to reach a record high in 2022 and 2023.
Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser recently stated that our government has reduced the processing backlog during the epidemic by nearly 500,000 applications, and has also achieved record-breaking application processing progress this year.

The backlog continues to decrease
As of December 2, there are still 2.2 million applications waiting to be processed in Canada.

Data from the Immigration Service on November 30 show that there are currently 1.09 million applications in Canada that are considered to have not been processed in accordance with service standards, which is the real processing backlog.
Immigration said that due to efforts to modernize services, all new partner sponsorship applications can now be processed within 12 months, while Express Entry applications can be processed within six months. They also reduced the backlog of Maple Leaf Card renewal applications by 99% during the epidemic.
The Canadian Immigration Service is committed to modernizing the immigration system
Since the epidemic, the Canadian Immigration Service has been dealing with the backlog of applications caused by relevant policies and office closures.
In order to resolve the processing backlog as quickly as possible, the USCIS is implementing changes to address inefficiencies, such as promoting online applications.
Citizenship applications for those over 18 years of age are now 100% online, and of the 318,000 citizenship applications currently in stock, only 28% are considered backlogged.
In addition, the Immigration Bureau also announced in August that it would recruit 1,250 new employees to join the application processing before the end of the year.
