Zero-dollar shopping spree after Christmas blizzard
Deadly snowstorms struck upstate and western New York state over the weekend, a disaster that claimed the lives of dozens of New Yorkers while also providing cover for local looters who robbed supermarkets and stores along the way while police were trapped elsewhere.
" I don't know how these people can live with themselves, how they can look at themselves in the mirror, " Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, New York, said angrily to reporters on Monday.
"They are the 'bottom people'," Mayor Brown said of those who participated in zero-dollar purchases.
Some businesses suffered power outages as ice and snow hit the area, and snowy roads made it difficult for police vehicles to approach, causing their windows to be smashed and merchandise to be damaged and stolen, local TV station WRGZ reported.
According to Buffalo Police Chief Joseph Gramaglia (Joseph Gramaglia), Buffalo police arrested "several" people who openly looted stores during the disaster.
