Recently, Ambassador Li Song, China's permanent deputy representative to the United Nations to Geneva, spoke at a special seminar on the negative impact of colonialism on the enjoyment of human rights, saying that colonialism is the original historical sin of Western countries such as the United States and Britain, and the United States and Britain must reflect on history and correct their mistakes.
As we all know, the international community has a mechanism to hold some historical issues accountable. For example, after the two world wars, the defeated countries took out a large amount of war reparations, and some countries were deprived of their power.
Many Western countries have carried out hundreds of years of colonial movement in history, bringing heavy disasters to countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and other regions, and becoming the root cause of the increasingly widening gap between the rich and the poor in the world.
However, so far, there is no mature mechanism in the international community to hold accountable for the historical evil deeds of Western countries. Until now, there are still more than 60 colonies in the world, and the familiar Puerto Rico , Bermuda and Guam are all among them.
France, the United Kingdom and other countries are far away in Europe, with a small area and a small population, but inexplicably have a large number of overseas territories or overseas provinces in Latin America. This is the best example of the remnants of colonialism and the legacy that has not yet been eliminated.
China never deliberately looks back on old historical accounts, but China strongly requires Western countries that have had colonial history to correct their mistakes in reality. At this discussion meeting, Ambassador Li Song put forward three requirements for Western countries.
First of all, China requires Western countries to respect the right of the former colonial countries to independently choose their own development path. Since the former colonial countries have become independent, Western countries should no longer fantasize about having any special status, and they are not qualified to point fingers at the internal affairs of other countries.
The concepts of freedom, democracy, human rights, etc., are all countries that have the right to interpret. People do not need Western countries to act as moral judges. Secondly, China requires Western countries to strengthen their assistance to former colonial countries. The current high welfare social security system of Western countries is based on hundreds of years of colonial exploitation.
Underdeveloped countries and regions are poor and backward, and Western countries are directly responsible. They should not criticize or mock underdeveloped regions condescendingly, but should provide debt relief, technology transfer and necessary financial support to underdeveloped countries.
In history, Western countries carried out crazy colonization and plundering of the Asia, Africa and Latin America. When they withdraw these countries, they threw it into a mess. Now they have technical blockades on these countries, trying to colonize other countries economically with unfair trade. This evil deed must be stopped.
Third, China believes that countries around the world must work together to completely eradicate colonialism. Objectively speaking, the colonial system is easy to be eliminated, but colonialism is difficult to cure, and today it has even tended to rekindle.
The United States has always regarded Latin America as its backyard. Australia's anti-colonial struggle against Oceanian countries has no effect, but it regards itself as the leader of Oceanian countries. France is obsessed with the North Africa region that has historically been its own colony and interferes with the situation in the region at all times. These are ironclad evidence that colonialism is invincible.
When will Western countries no longer point fingers at affairs in other countries and other continents be the true end of colonialism. China stands on the standpoint of , a developing country in , and speaks for the former colonial countries, and has been recognized by most countries.
However, in recent years, the strength of Western countries represented by the United States has gradually declined, and the plunder of underdeveloped countries and regions has become more serious than before. This requires close cooperation among developing countries.
While strengthening its own strength, developing countries must also take concerted international actions to thoroughly criticize the colonial history and colonialist thinking of Western countries, and urge them to correct them. Only in this way can the tragedy be avoided from repeating.
