According to reports, Zeman entered the Prague Central Military Hospital due to discomfort on the 18th. At that time, a hospital spokesman said that he planned to be hospitalized for a short period of time. According to reports, the cause of Zeman's hospitalization was unknown, which briefly caused people to worry about his performance of presidential duties.
In October last year, the " Washington Post " reported that Zeman was rushed to the hospital due to a sudden illness and was hospitalized for more than six weeks. Hours before he fell ill, the party of former Prime Minister Andrej Babis, an ally he supported, lost in Czech parliamentary elections. Zeman was finally discharged from the hospital on November 25, but on the afternoon of the same day, he tested positive for the new coronavirus and entered the isolation period again. According to the Czech Constitution, the formation of a government must be authorized by the head of state. Zeman's hospitalization and quarantine come amid the formation of a new government, amid reports that he will be suspended from the presidency. But on November 28, Zeman appointed Peter Fiala, chairman of the opposition Civic Democratic Party, as prime minister of the new government while in quarantine.
Zeman will end his last five-year term in March next year. It is reported that the president is the head of state of the Czech Republic and plays a mainly ceremonial role, but has powers including appointing the prime minister and the president of the central bank.
According to reports, Zeman has been suffering from diabetes and neurological diseases, and he has been using a wheelchair for the past year.
