Air France KLM Martin Air Cargo (AFKLMP Cargo) cooperates with Monaco Marine Museum to transport 46 young tortoises to Senegal as part of a population increase project.
transfer to Le Village des Tortues in Noflaye, a conservation center located in the center of a special plant reserve, is a phase of a three-year program.
The delivery of the tortoise to Senegal was achieved by the professional services of AFKLMP Freight Company, which on December 12 transported the tortoise from Monaco via its hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Dakar .
This scheme includes the management of turtles in the Senegal Tortues Village, Tortues Village, introduced them to the Koyli Alpha Nature Reserve in the northwest of the country and monitored them for two years.
Since 2012, the Monaco Marine Museum has been home to several of the world's third largest tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata). The herbivorous reptiles came from a breeding center in , Mali, and were entrusted to Robert Calcagno, director of the Monaco Institute of Oceanography, to educate visitors on the need to protect the endangered species.
"Protecting land and marine animals species and making them aware of them is a major challenge in the future. By raising these now-endangered turtles, we allow them to reproduce while raising awareness among tourists to protect them. The logical result is an effort to increase local wild populations," explains Robert Calcanio.
At the end of the quarantine phase, the pups will be transferred to the fenced area of the reserve for a year so that they can adapt to the living conditions in the wild. They will then be released to the protected areas managed by the association, as per the recommendations and instructions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
