How could a dangerous dinosaur be smart? Pounds by pound, they are one of the stupidest creatures ever to roam the planet. However, not all Raptors, Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus and Throne Dragon are equally stupid. Some people may even (just barely) reach the level of intelligence in mammals. In the slideshow below, you will find a list of 10 of the smartest dinosaurs based on a combination of their anatomy and behavior.

Troodon is a human-sized subarosaur dinosaur in the late Cretaceous period and has become the typical lizard of dinosaur intelligence, thanks to a paper by paleontologist Dale Russell decades ago, speculating how this dinosaur might have evolved if it weren't for the K-T extinction event. Judging from its predatory arsenal - big eyes, extremely fast speed and stereo vision -, Trot d must have a particularly large brain, in which case "big" means about the size of modern possum (in terms of its proportion relative to other parts of the body, d trot is still far ahead of other dinosaurs).

When it comes to dinosaur intelligence, what matters is not how big your brain is compared to other reptiles of the same age, but how big your brain is compared to other parts of the body. In this regard, the tiny chicken-sized Compsognathus seems to be an honor student in the late Jurassic period, perhaps as clever as a very stupid mouse (yes, in the Mesozoic, that's enough to get you into advanced placement classes). Perhaps Compsognathus evolved its level of intelligence to keep up with gliding Archaeoptera , whose fossils were found in the same German sediment.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

But from the analysis of existing skulls, according to Mesozoic standards, the brain of Tyrannosaurus Rex is quite large (although today this dinosaur may be outsmarted by newborn kittens). Tyrannosaurus is sure to have more gray matter than the same size Giganotosaurus, which is an unusually stupid predator in South America.
