China.com, October 14 (Reporter Zhao Xiaowen) According to World World Foundation of Nature , the WWF recently released the Earth's Vitality Report 2022 (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), pointing out that since 1970, the average number of wildlife populations including mammals, birds, amphibians , reptile and fish within the monitoring range has dropped by 69%.

The report shows that around the world, the main factors that lead to the decline in wildlife population are habitat degradation, development, invasive alien species, pollution, climate change and disease, resulting in a 66% decrease in the number of wildlife in Africa and a 55% decrease in the number of wildlife in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to reports, the Earth's vitality index monitoring targets released by the Report this time include nearly 32,000 populations of 5,230 species, which is the largest monitoring data scale at present. Data show that wild vertebrate populations in tropical areas are declining sharply at an astonishing rate. Among them, from 1970 to 2018, the number of wildlife populations within the monitoring range in Latin America and the Caribbean region decreased by 94%.

In addition, among all monitored species populations, freshwater species populations fell by an average of 83%, with the largest decline. Habitat loss and obstructed migration routes are the main threats facing migratory fish species.

The report emphasizes that the current natural ecology faces severe challenges and it is necessary to take urgent changes to reverse the trend of degradation of biodiversity .
