Dinosaurs became extinct tens of millions of years ago, but today we not only know the existence of dinosaurs, but even their appearance and living habits. The reason why we can understand dinosaurs across time and space is because they left evidence of their existence on the earth's fossils. Among them are not only fossils formed by the remains of dinosaurs, but also fossils of their footprints.
Among the dinosaur footprints, there is a unique and conspicuous "V" shaped footprint, which is easily distinguished from other dinosaur footprints. The owner of this footprint is Deinonychus, a ferocious carnivorous dinosaur that lived in the Cretaceous period. Members of the genus Deinonychus are generally slender and agile, with a body length of 2.5 to 4 meters and a height of more than 1 meter. Among the five toes of Deinonychus, the first and fifth toes degenerated and became smaller, and the second toe was curved like a sickle. When walking, it is retracted so that only the third and fourth toes touch the ground. The sharp second toe was the hunting weapon of Deinonychus. When facing small prey, Deinonychus probably used the second toe to nail the prey
into its body and tear the prey apart; when facing large prey, Deinonychus might become an adult. They hunt in packs and use their second toe to climb onto their prey to kill it.
Deinonychus is widely distributed throughout China, and paleontologists have found their footprints in many areas. These footprints are relatively small, a result of Deinonychus' small size. However, scientists recently discovered nearly 40 centimeters long Deinonychus footprints in Shanghang County, Longyan City, Fujian Province. They estimate that the Deinonychus that left these traces was about five to six meters long, or even longer. This is also the first time that large Deinonychus footprint fossils have been discovered in my country.
More than 240 fossil footprints were discovered this time. In addition to the Deinonychus footprints, there are at least 8 species of sauropods, large, medium and small ornithopods, large three-toed theropods and small theropods. Dinosaur footprints. The red argillaceous siltstone and silty mudstone in which these dinosaur tracks lie suggests the site may have once been a silt-filled lake. Dinosaurs of all sizes may have hunted and drank here, leaving abundant footprints in the mud that came and went. These dinosaurs have long disappeared in the long river of time, but their footprints have been accidentally preserved until now, becoming excellent materials for us to study dinosaur activities and ancient ecology.
