On July 7, 1937, the sound of Japanese invaders attacking Lugou Bridge declared that the Chinese nation was at its most dangerous time. From then on, under the banner of the Anti-Japanese National United Front based on the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the Chinese people began a comprehensive war of resistance that determined the future and destiny of the Chinese nation, and finally achieved complete victory. The victory of the Anti-Japanese War is a major turning point in the Chinese nation's rejuvenation from decline to rejuvenation, and has embarked on a new journey of the ancient Chinese phoenix's rebirth and rebirth from the ashes.

"New York Times " reported from July 1937 to September 1945, from the perspective of Westerners, this history of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was observed and recorded in a relatively comprehensive manner. These reports and comments not only reflect the fierce situation of the war and the objective fact that the Chinese people are indomitable and bloody fighting and have made significant contributions to the victory of the world anti-fascist war, but also reflect the situation of China at that time and the people of the world support China's war of resistance from the perspectives of politics, economy, culture, society, and people's livelihood.

books were listed as one of the "100 Key Books to Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War" by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee and the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.

Zheng Xiyuan was born in May 1963 in Neijiang City, Sichuan Province. He studied at Lanzhou University , Diplomatic School , Peking University and Duke University in the United States. The 1984th selected candidates from the Organization Department of the Gansu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, volunteered to work in the rural areas of Longnan for three years. Later, he worked in the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture, the State Administration of Prices and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as deputy consul of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, counselor of the Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Mumbai. He is currently the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester. He has written " Ancient Chinese Culture ", "The Road to the Future" (cooperating with Li Fanghui), "The Crisis of the High Position" (cooperating with Ike), and edited "Memories of the Empire: The New York Times' Late Qing Observation", "Ten Years of the Republic: The New York Times' Early Republic of China Observation", "Rebirth of the Ashes: The New York Times' China Anti-Japanese War Observation", etc. Assist his father Zheng Shiwen to check the "A Army Crossing the Smoke of Gun: A Student Soldier's Personal Experience on the Korean Battlefield".

The Chinese people have gone through eight years of hardships in the nationwide war of resistance, facing the enemy's artillery fire. In the bloody sacrifice, Japan's militarist plot to colonize and enslave China was completely shattered, the national awakening and unity were promoted, and historical opportunities were created for the struggle for independence and liberation of the Chinese nation. War and revolution were carried out simultaneously in the land of China, where wolf-smoke was everywhere, opening up a bright prospect for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The New York Times' epic report on China's War of Resistance is exciting. "Rebirth of the Fire of the New York Times: Observation on China's War of Resistance" and "Memories of the Empire: Observation on the Late Qing Dynasty of the New York Times" and "Ten Years of the Republic: Observation on the Early Republic of China" together constitute the "New York Times' China Observation on China" trilogy. The intention of editing this book is to provide a perspective of observation and thinking for the Chinese people to review how our country, a country with ancient civilizations, rose from the Jedi to revival.

When I first edited "Memories of the Empire", my daughter Zheng Kexue was only 6 years old; when I compiled "Rebirth of the Fire", she had graduated from Imperial College London. Zheng Kexue said that the War of Resistance Against Japan is the most glorious chapter in the modern history of the nation, burning cities, exiled universities, the economy on the verge of collapse, the military battles repeatedly, and the capital that retreats again and again. However, no matter where we retreat, no matter how many lands are lost, no matter how many people are sacrificed, the Chinese military and civilians will never give up and fight to the end. Such a magnificent historical scroll fully demonstrates our national integrity and selfless spirit of not fearing violence and uniting with the enemy. This is the most brilliant, tragic and touching chapter of the Chinese nation in desperate situations, and is our very precious national memory. These "post-90s" students who are wandering in foreign countries hope to participate in the compilation work and commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in their own way. This is a good idea! I immediately suggested to the publisher that all the people involved in the compilation of this work volunteered and did not pay them, so as to reflect our remembrance of the martyrs of the War of Resistance and the martyrs.

Not long after, a group of Chinese students established the China Anti-Japanese War theme salon. They often gather in an apartment near the Dutch Park in London on weekends, and chose the literary totem of Southwest Associated University as the official account, publish an initiative, and use new media platforms such as WeChat, Baidu Cloud, and dropbox to convey information and organize translation. They used their fingers to touch the scene of the War of Resistance against Japan that was enchanting for more than 70 years ago, and immersively experienced the tragic and glory of the national war of resistance, providing an example for contemporary young people to regain national memory, revitalize national spirit, and build " Chinese Dream " in the new era. Under their inspiration, Chinese students and students from the United States, Canada, Australia, Switzerland , Netherlands and other countries also participated. Later, professors from the Department of English, white-collar workers from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, editor-in-chief of Overseas Chinese Newspapers also responded.

Anti-Japanese war is the suffering of the nation, and it is also a poem about the nation's glory. The War of Resistance made the international community re-understand China. In the early days of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the international community was relatively indifferent to this war in the East and believed that China's resistance would undoubtedly be defeated. No one expected that the Chinese would fight so tenaciously and so tragic to defend their homeland. The War of Resistance became a legend in the history of world wars. The lovely China and the lovely Chinese people have won widespread sympathy from the international community. A large number of internationalist fighters came to China to help the Chinese people. The War of Resistance became an important part of the international anti-fascist war, which laid the foundation for China to achieve the position of the top four after the war.

Anti-Japanese War made the international community admire Communist Party of China . The book fully reflects the situation on the front battlefield in the selection of original materials, but also truly reflects the objective fact that the CCP proposed a protracted war policy, opened up bases behind enemy lines, mobilized the people, and established the broadest anti-Japanese national united front, becoming the mainstay of leading China's war of resistance. The emergence of the Communist Party of China, an important political force, on the world stage, has a huge impact on the changes in the post-war Far East political landscape.

The War of Resistance greatly inspires the national spirit of the Chinese people. "Get up! People who don't want to be slaves! Build our flesh and blood into our new Great Wall." No matter in the city, in the countryside, in the trenches, in schools, and in teahouses, no matter where the land is north and south, no matter how old or young, everyone is singing the song of the Anti-Japanese War with their heads held high. The fighting China has become a sea of songs, and the high-pitched singing is as loud as the sound of cannons. China is no longer "under the world, can it be the king's land ", but has become the country of the people, with 400 million compatriots excited and united to go to the national crisis. The old world was broken, an ancient backward old China disappeared, and she was reborn in the ashes.

When these original records flow out from the children's trembling fingertips, these classmates who were full of emerging Internet languages suddenly discovered that there was actually a hidden corner deep in their hearts, always maintaining a solemnity. Under the glory of the nation, they stared at the mountains and rivers of the motherland again, their cold eyes became soft, and their pure eyes were filled with autumn waves, becoming warm and passionate. When we became a book, we must first pay high respects to the war correspondents who insisted on being on the land of China in the New York Times! They bravely ran on the battlefields of China and Myanmar, and had deep sympathy for the Chinese people in a tragic situation. They risked huge risks to smuggle precious photos of the Japanese army's atrocities in Nanjing Massacre, and made it publicly, arousing public outrage from world public opinion towards Japanese fascism; they reported the fierce battle situation of the Taierzhuang Battle, the Wuhan Battle , the Changsha Defense Battle and the Chinese Expeditionary Force on the battlefield in Myanmar, especially the heroic feats of Chinese soldiers fighting to the death; they reported the battle scenes of Yan'an and the anti-Japanese base areas behind enemy lines , as well as the successful attempts of the CCP to implement democratic reforms and establish a people's regime; they reported the heroic battle of General Chennard General Flying Tigers fighting with the Japanese army and the CCP guerrillas rescued US pilots. These reports truly and objectively show that the Chinese people's War of Resistance Against Japan is an important part of the world's anti-fascist war. The Chinese people have made great sacrifices that outsiders can unimaginably win for the cause of justice and peace in the world. Restoreing these historical records is undoubtedly of great and profound enlightenment for us to seriously think about the theme of the times of peace and development and the importance of the new type of Sino-US major power relations under the new situation in the 21st century.

1943 New Year is approaching, New York Times reporter Ai Jinsheng wrote: "Tomorrow" can also be understood as "a bright day" in Chinese. After five and a half years of suffocating war, the Chinese people are still very optimistic. They were subjected to continuous attacks by closely organized enemy troops and almost became nothing in the war, but they still held on to their confidence in independence and victory. "Tomorrow" is "Bright Day"! This is no longer a news report in the ordinary sense, but a fighting horn that praises China's war of resistance and inspires people to rise up. Thanks to the reporters of the New York Times for spreading the deeds of Chinese military and civilians' brave resistance throughout the world with affectionate words at the most critical moment of the Chinese nation. They are sincere friends of the Chinese people.

takes this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all comrades who participated in the compilation of this book! We will list all volunteers involved in the compilation of this book in the form of "Warrior Wall". The "General Translation Review" led by Comrade Zhang Yuanyuan, former director of the Translation Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former ambassador to New Zealand and Belgium . He accompanied Harrison Salisbury, former deputy editor-in-chief of the New York Times, to retrace the Long March of the Red Army, and assisted him in writing "The Long March: An Unheard of Stories", which caused a sensation across the United States after its publication. He and other translation reviews gave the greatest tolerance to the children's uneven translations. Ambassador Zhang also sent back the red-written translations for the children to learn from. The historical consultant for this book is Mr. Rong Weimu , an expert in the history of the Anti-Japanese War at the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He corrected the historical facts in the original text and translation. The editor-in-charge is Comrade Zhou Wuyi, the former president of Contemporary China Press. My brother May Day once guided me to publish "Memories of the Empire" as the deputy editor-in-chief of Sanlian Bookstore in Beijing. When he retired in 2015, he used this book as his "final work". My wife Li Fanghui also contributed to the collection, translation and manuscript of the original documents of this book. I would also like to thank Comrade Yang Zhiqi for actively coordinating the first draft, translation review and final draft of the translation sent from home and abroad. Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to the Contemporary China Press for its efforts in the publication of this book.

In early 2015, I was appointed as the Consul General of China in Mumbai. Coming to India has given me a new understanding of the Chinese people's War of Resistance Against Japan. When we fought bloody battles with Japanese fascists in the Far East battlefield, there were many friendly countries and friends in the world supporting and helping us. Although India was not independent at that time, it also extended a helping hand to the great Chinese people: the Chinese Expeditionary Force retreated from Myanmar entered India and received training and dress-up; the Stilwell Highway from Lido to Kunming, China transported more than 50,000 tons of urgently needed materials to the Chinese battlefield in the rain of bullets; the hump route from Assam, also transported 650,000 tons of important combat preparation materials to China. These two life channels have made great historical contributions to China's final victory. We deeply realize that a world that loves peace and justice is a united family, and no country can exist in isolation; how important is it to unite all nations in the world that are equal to our nation, work together, develop together, and form a "community of shared future" to the survival and progress of our nation!

Mumbai is the starting point for the great internationalist fighter Dr. Ke Dihua to aid China. In June 2015, I held the "Mumbai: From here, the Indian medical team went to China to support the 77th Anniversary of the War of Resistance" at the Taj Hotel, where the Chinese Consul General saw off, and played the movie "Doctor Ke Dihua" shot in 1946 in Bollywood . When the heroine in the film sang " March " in Hindi , the whole group stood up, and many people's eyes were filled with tears. That time, the elegiac couplet written by Chairman Mao Zedong to mourn Dr. Ke Dihua was specially exhibited, "The whole army lost one help, and the nation lost one friend." Several vigorous and powerful words were very eye-catching. As the Chinese Consul General in Mumbai, I accompanied the Chinese Party and state leaders to meet with Dr. Ke Dihua's family, and also did some things for his hometown. The Chinese people will never forget to selflessly help our international friends and friendly neighbors in difficult times. Before I put the pen down, I wanted to reveal a secret inside that there was a ruins of the aviation school during the Anti-Japanese War in my consular area that was not found. According to records, hundreds of Chinese students were trained at Pune Air Force Base near Mumbai. Many of them came from Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing, and they were not used to eating Print and Western food. Local overseas Chinese have set up several Sichuan restaurants outside the aviation school gate, which are very popular among students. Overseas Chinese said: "All of them are baby-faced, very young. One by one, they never come back after leaving." At that time, the young Chinese Air Force pole. In the absence of pilots, aviation school students flew the Hump route as soon as they graduated. The students of the aviation school in the previous period died, and the students of the aviation school in the next period were made up for it, and they continued to go one after another, which was melodious. Most of them are buried in the snowy plateau of their motherland. With the return of the soul, we must find a way to find this site and erect a monument for the outstanding sons of the Chinese people.

Due to the limited editing time, all volunteer compilers participate in their spare time, so it is difficult to form a masterpiece. We just took the fragments and put them into several sketches to build a simple altar to commemorate the War of Resistance. Light the candlelight and use our sincere and simple feelings to express our grief for the martyrs and our yearning for the great cause of national rejuvenation.

I would like to dedicate this book to the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression!
