Ma Ying-jeou is a former leader of Taiwan. Although he was born in Hong Kong, his ancestral home is in Hunan Province. His family was considered a "famous family" in Hunan at the time.

Although Ma Ying-jeou has not returned to the mainland to "visit relatives", Ma Ying-jeou's father Ma Heling has always been in contact with his relatives in the mainland and has also returned to the mainland to reunite with his relatives.

Ma Heling and Chairman Mao are fellow townsmen and Yang Kaihui are alumni. Although they have moved to Taiwan for decades, they have always cared about the mainland and their relatives. They have worked hard to achieve the great cause of national reunification throughout their lives.

The local famous family in Hunan

In front of Majiayan Temple in Xiangtan County, Changsha, Hunan, it is really an inconspicuous small place. However, for the former leader of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, this place is very special because this is his hometown.

Ma Ying-jeou often said in Taiwan that he was a descendant of Hong Kong Hong Kong Ma Yuan . Some people thought that he was giving to his face. However, in front of the temple, the old man Ma Dayang, who was responsible for managing the Ma family genealogy, confirmed this.

Based on the "Hutian Ma Family Genealogy" and Ma Dayang claimed that Ma Yuan was a famous general of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and his descendants were spread all over the country. One of the descendants was the Hutian Ma Family located in Xiangtan, Hunan. Therefore, Ma Ying-jeou did not use celebrities to gild his face, but it was indeed the case.

Moreover, if you trace it back, the ancestors of the Ma family did not have the surname Ma, but Zhao, and they were also a celebrity, that is, . The famous general of the State of War in . Zhao She .

Zhao She was given the title of " Ma Fujun " for her outstanding meritorious service. Since then, Zhao She's descendants have begun to change their surnames to Ma, and they have been passed down to this day.

and in front of the temple, Ma Ying-jeou's grandfather was also a local celebrity, and his family also belonged to a local famous family. Ma Ying-jeou's grandfather was named Ma Li'an. He was born in the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, the Ma family's business had grown very strong locally, and Ma Li'an himself was also a very good business person.

There are memories of local elderly people that after Ma Li'an became the family, the Ma family's business grew bigger and bigger. The Ma family opened an cast iron pot factory, a slaughterhouse, rice factory and other enterprises.

In addition to more than 300 acres of land, there are many Linjiang stores, which have convenient transportation and prosperous business. At that time, the Ma family had more than 40 long-term workers alone, and hired many accountant men and housekeepers, which was extremely glorious in the eyes of locals.

Ma Li'an's family has great achievements, but not only does not bully others by virtue, he also often does good deeds. He often says, "Everything is empty and good is not empty." This later became the ancestral teachings of the Ma family. It is said that this was also hung in Ma Ying-jeou's office, reminding himself to "keep the ancestral teachings in mind."

Specifically, when Ma Li'an was alive, he donated money to the local area to build wharfs, ferries, nursery and other facilities, which was well received in the local area. In order to commemorate Ma Li'an's good deeds, the locals also specially built a monument of merit for Ma Li'an.

In addition, due to the turbulent situation at that time, in order to fight against the local bandits, Ma Li'an also presided over the regiment training and paid out of his own pocket to reward the nearby army. It was praised by the locals. He was also called the "General of the First Regiment in Central Hunan".

To this day, the Ma family’s ancestral tomb can still be seen in Xiangtan . Although after the war and the changes of time, the Ma family’s ancestral tomb has been intact as before, and Ma Li'an has also been buried here forever.

It is said that this is not only because the Ma family is prosperous and often comes to worship and clean, but also because the locals are always carefully guarding the Ma family's ancestral graves. This may also be the reward for the villagers' kindness to Ma Li'an.

Although Malian had long been buried underground, the locals are still using the dock he donated to build and enjoy his kindness, and they also think it is natural to repay his kindness.

In the hearts of the locals, in addition to always thinking about Ma Li'an's good deeds, they also "don't forget" Ma Li'an's son Ma Heling.

In fact, in the hearts of local villagers, Ma Heling seems to be a more specific "person", because the people who know Ma Li'an have basically passed away. Now the elderly in the village only often hear about Ma Li'an's kindness from the elders, and have passed it on.

, Ma Heling met many elderly people in the village, or was close relatives. Their impression of Ma Heling was generous and generous, and warm-hearted.

Chairman Mao’s fellow townsman and an alumnus of Yang Kaihui

Ma Heling is Ma Ying-jeou’s father. He was born to Ma Li’an’s second wife Xiang Dun. He was born in the ancestral home of the Ma family in front of the temple.

According to local research, this ancestral residence is only more than 40 kilometers away from Chairman Mao’s rushing house in Shaoshan . In other words, Ma Heling and Chairman Mao are actually fellow villagers.

It's no wonder. Although Ma Ying-jeou was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Taiwan, his Changsha dialect is very good. After all, "rounding" it, Ma Ying-jeou and Chairman Mao also have a "members-in-law".

After his father Ma Li'an passed away, Xiang Dun took Ma Heling and others to live in Xinhu Village, Hengshan County. Due to the death of Ma Li'an, the pillar of the family, Ma Heling's family's life was once difficult. Fortunately, with the support of his cousin Mr. Ma Jing, their family was able to move to Hengshan County and spend this difficult time.

During the middle school period, Ma Heling spent at at Yueyun Middle School. He had excellent grades in the school and excellent sports performance. He not only served as the captain of the school's basketball team and volleyball team, but also won the championship of the provincial Games 10,000-meter long-distance running. Since then, he has won the championship in provincial and municipal sports meetings many times.

It can be said that Ma Ying-jeou later loved running and his habit of running and exercise was also influenced by his father.

Yueyun Middle School was founded by the famous modern educator He Binglin . It was originally named Hunan South Road Public School. It was renamed Hunan Private Yueyun Middle School in 1914. Since its establishment, the school has run schools with the purpose of "comprehensive development" and strives to cultivate comprehensive talents.

And the teachers and students of Yueyun Middle School do not disappoint Mr. He Binglin's expectations, and their school achievements are outstanding. Yueyun Middle School also enjoys the reputation of "there are in the north and the in the south, and the yueyun in the south". In addition to Ma Heling, there are also revolutionary pioneers Yang Kaihui, in Li Qihan , academicians of the two academies, and Meng Shaonong and others.

In other words, Ma Heling is not only a fellow townsman with Chairman Mao, but also an alumni with Yang Kaihui. When you come here, it may not be difficult for you to understand why Ma Heling is concerned about the mainland and committed to the reunification of the motherland throughout his life, which has a lot to do with the education he received since childhood and the living environment.

Originally, Ma Heling was very interested in engineering, and the university was also preparing to study engineering majors.

However, when he accidentally read Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary theory, he became very interested in politics, so he decided to give up engineering and devote himself to revolutionary activities.

In 1941, Ma Heling was admitted to the 11th session of the Central Political University of Chongqing Nansen. After graduation, he joined the army. He also served as the guard officer of Chiang Kai-shek and lieutenant colonel of Chiang Ching-kuo "National Salvation Corps".

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in , Ma Heling also returned home in glory. This time he returned home, he also did a "earth-shaking" event. One night after he returned to his hometown, he gathered the tenants from his family together, took out the contract for the rent that the tenants owed him over the years, and burned them directly.

This is equivalent to waive all the debts of these tenants. This move certainly won everyone's constant gratitude. Many people were excited and burst into tears. They hugged Ma Heling tightly and shouted "Long live". This seemed to show Ma Heling's "chivalrous courage".

In 1949, Ma Heling went to Hong Kong, where Ma Ying-jeou was born. Speaking of this, we have to mention that Ma Heling followed the ancestral teachings and said that "everything is empty and good is not empty" and that he exempted the tenant farmers from debts in one fell swoop, which also received rewards from the tenant farmers.

After the peaceful liberation of Hunan, the Ma family was criticized and punished for the "land reform" for the ingredients of landlords and rich peasants, and Ma Heling's old mother was also detained.

Koma family tenants were grateful for their kindness for exempting their debts, so they took advantage of the darkness of the night and let the old man escape safely and reunite with Ma Heling, hoping to reunite with Ma Heling.

At that time, Ma Heling had already moved to Taiwan with the Kuomintang, but after he heard that his mother had arrived in Hong Kong, he took his family back to Hong Kong to reunite with his mother. During this period, Ma Ying-jeou was born in Guanghua Hospital in Hong Kong.

It was not until the autumn of 1951 that Ma Heling and his family went to Taiwan again. Since then, Ma Heling has served as secretary of the Kuomintang Yangmingshan Party Committee, deputy chairman of the Taipei Party Committee, and deputy director of the Central Assessment and Discipline Committee.

Although it seems that Ma Heling belongs to the senior cadre of the Kuomintang , because he is straightforward, he is always a "deputy position" and seems to have never held any official position.

However, this does not affect Ma Heling's longing for his hometown, his relatives, and his commitment to the great cause of national reunification.

has always been concerned about the mainland and is committed to the reunification of the motherland

After the Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait were in a state of confrontation for a period of time, and Ma Heling was unable to contact his relatives in his hometown, but he always cared about his relatives and wanted to return to his hometown to worship his ancestors to show his filial piety.

Until 1974, after the overall environment was relatively relaxed, Ma Heling immediately asked his daughter to write a letter from the United States to his nephew in his hometown Liu Zhaoli to ask about his hometown and relatives.

Liu Zhaoli's mother Ma Yunying is Ma Heling's real sister. The relationship between the brother and sister has always been very good. It was not until after Ma Heling went to Hong Kong that the two broke off contact. Therefore, when Liu Zhaoli received the letter from Ma Yinan, he was very excited and the two families finally resumed contact.

Liu Zhaoli immediately replied to Ma Heling about the changes in his hometown, his own and his mother's situation, and sent him a lot of local photos and their life photos.

Liu Zhaoli later recalled that after the two families resumed contact, Ma Heling was very excited and mentioned in the letter that he particularly missed his sister and nephew.

Ma Heling also mentioned in the letter that the letters between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait were not communicated and could not contact their relatives. When he and his mother missed Ma Yunying and his son, they could only hold their heads and cry, and they could not do anything else.

In 1989, Taiwan opened a project for mainland faculty and staff to visit relatives in Taiwan. Ma Heling immediately made efforts from multiple parties to handle the procedures for Ma Yunying and Liu Zhaoli to Taiwan.

In 1990, Ma Yunying and his son landed at Taoyuan Airport, Taiwan. Ma Heling had been waiting at the airport for a long time. The brother and sister met again after decades of separation, and both cried bitterly.

When Ma Heling was in Taiwan, he learned that Ma Yunying's left eye was almost blind, and immediately arranged for her to go to a Taiwanese hospital for treatment. After curing Ma Yunying's eye disease, he reluctantly asked her to return to the mainland. When the two families always maintained close contact and often communicated with each other through letters and phone calls.

In 1995, Ma Heling, who had been away from the mainland for more than 40 years, returned to the mainland with his wife, daughter and son-in-law for the first time. After finishing his trip to Nanjing and Chongqing, Ma Heling finally returned to his hometown Changsha, Hunan.

At the Xiangjiang Hotel in Changsha, Ma Heling met with relatives and friends who had been away for a long time. Afterwards, Ma Heling's niece recalled that although Ma Heling lived in Taiwan for a long time, her hometown accent had not changed and the Xiangtan dialect was still very well spoken.

Moreover, although the two are uncle and nephew, they have been very close since they were only 5 years apart in age. On that day, they chatted late at night in hometown dialect and recalled many interesting stories from childhood.

Ma Heling also returned to his alma mater, Yueyun Middle School, and donated 10,000 US dollars to his alma mater. He established the "Yinan Sports Scholarship Fund" in the name of Mr. Yang Yinan, former sports director of Yueyun Middle School, to express his gratitude to his alma mater.

Later, Ma Heling also contacted some Yueyun Middle School alumni who were also in Taiwan, raised millions of NT$ to donate them to his alma mater, and established the "He Binglin Scholarship Fund" to reward young students.

1998, my country suffered a major flood. After learning the news, Ma Heling immediately launched a donation in Taiwan and donated NT$1 million to Hunan, NT$3, making contributions to earthquake relief in his hometown.

In 2000, Ma Yunying died in her hometown in Hunan. Before her death, she specifically told her son not to tell Ma Heling about the news. However, because cross-strait communication was more convenient at that time, Ma Heling often called home to ask about her sister's situation, but the news could not be hidden.

After learning that his sister had passed away, Ma Heling burst into tears on the other end of the phone. How can it not make people feel sad if the brother and sister who have deep feelings don’t even meet for the last time?

In addition to thinking about the relatives of the mainland, Ma Heling has also been committed to the great cause of cross-strait reunification.

After Ma Heling retired in 1992, he also organized the "World Chinese Peace Construction Association" to promote cross-strait unity and cooperation and resolve cross-strait hostility.

Ma Heling believes that only by the unification of the cross-strait can the motherland become more prosperous and strong. He believes in "peaceful reunification and prosperity of China". Therefore, even though he is old, he still insists on giving speeches in various places and promoting the idea of peaceful reunification of the cross-strait, hoping to speed up the process of reunification of the motherland.

In 2004, in order to oppose Chen Shui-bian's "referendum" and "Taiwan independence" propositions, Ma Heling also appealed to the Ma people in Taiwan, asking them to unite and use the votes in their hands to elect a leader who is truly conducive to Taiwan's peace and cross-strait reunification. This move received a positive response from the Ma people.

Although Chen Shui-bian finally won the Taiwan leadership election, we cannot deny Ma Heling's efforts to reunify the motherland and peace in the Taiwan Strait.

In 2005, Ma Heling also formed a group to Handan, Hebei, the ancestral source of the Ma family, to search for roots and worship his ancestors, which caused a huge response at home and abroad. Ma Heling's niece felt very regretful when she mentioned this. She said that Ma Heling invited her to go to Hebei to find her roots, but she did not agree at that time.

Although she knew that Ma Heling wanted her to be "scenic", she was old at the time, and secondly, she didn't think about showing up in public, so she did not agree. She just felt that the interaction between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait was frequent and the exchanges were more convenient, and relatives still had the opportunity to meet and reminisce. Who would have thought that Ma Heling passed away in the second half of 2005 and they never had the opportunity to meet again, which became her eternal regret.

In November 2005, Ma Heling died of illness in Taiwan. He left a will to hope that Ma Ying-jeou could inherit his ambitions, unite all forces that can be united, and realize the great cause of reunification of the motherland.

Unfortunately, not only did Ma Ying-jeou not only failed to fulfill his father's last wish, but his intention to go to the mainland to find relatives and worship ancestors was also forced to delay it again and again, and he has not been able to do so.
