Tan Weiwei once said that opera is particularly ritualistic, and you can feel things on different levels while enjoying opera. This time, we collaborated with director Jia Zhangke again, and the tacit understanding was even better than before. Their shared perception and appreciation of symphonic music ultimately led to this opportunity for cooperation.
Abstract audio-visual aesthetics deconstructs Chinese people's lives
Jia Zhangke also expressed his views on the choice of music: "The reason why I chose to use symphony instead of pop songs is because the storytelling methods and themes are different. Popular songs rely more on the content of the lyrics, and using symphony to connect different elements is a better and more abstract way." Director Jia Zhangke revealed, "At first, when I was thinking about how to build this movie, I thought of using a linear structure arranged in chronological order to unfold the stories of these four generations of writers, but when I edited, I began to realize that there are some common themes, issues and problems that China has been dealing with, beyond the original linear order, and the film began to become very abstract."
Jia Zhangke pointed out, "Photographing them is very similar to shooting a novel, because there are four groups of characters, a long history, and basic problems that each of us has to experience and that each era has to experience." Therefore, when building this documentary, we chose to connect with 18 themes, face "eating", "love", "returning to the hometown", "new and old", "long journey", "illness", "live", "mother", "father" and other 18 keywords that everyone cannot avoid in their lives, and use this as the theme chapter to tell the story, face the truth of the times, and evoke the deep emotions of the Chinese people.
