01 China Railway Construction won the bid for the largest transportation infrastructure project in Guyana
On May 25th local time, China Railway Construction and the Ministry of Public Works of Guyana signed the "New Demerala River Bridge Project" construction contract in Georgetown , marking that China Railway Construction officially enters the Guyana market. The project is the largest transportation infrastructure project in Guyana.
New Demerala River Bridge Project rendering
"After the project is completed, it will provide great convenience for ships on the Demerala River," said Guyana Public Works Minister Juan Anthony Edgehill at the signing ceremony of the New Demerala River Bridge Project. The project is located on the Demerala River in Georgetown, Guyana. It is a reinforced concrete cross-river bridge with a cable-stayed structure on the main bridge. The total length of the new bridge is about 2,800 meters, with 4 lanes in both directions + dual non-motorized vehicle lanes, with a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour and a service life of 100 years. The main projects include: bridge main body, toll station, traffic signs, drainage systems, anti-collision facilities, bridge lighting, bridge head guide, etc.
New Bridge is located about 600 meters south of the existing Demerala River Bridge. The existing bridge was completed in 1978. It is a two-way two-lane steel pontoon bridge with a speed limit of 32 km/h. The bridge deck needs to be opened 1 to 2 times a day for upstream and downstream boats to pass through, each time taking 1 hour. When the floating bridge structure is repaired, traffic will be interrupted for more than 5 hours each time, causing serious traffic congestion between the east and west sides. The new bridge is a viaduct, and all ships can pass through the main navigation hole without interrupting bridge traffic. After the new bridge is completed, it will shorten the passage time by three-quarters, expand the traffic volume of ships by more than twice, and greatly reduce the daily maintenance costs of the bridge.
"The New Demerala River Bridge will surely become a landmark project for China-Guyana cooperation." Guo Haiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, said in his speech at the signing ceremony that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Guyana, and the signing of the "New Demerala River Bridge Project" is another important achievement of China-Guyana friendly cooperation, which is crucial to the Guyana people living on both sides of the Demerala River. After the project is completed, it will effectively promote cross-strait logistics and transportation, save local residents' travel costs, and drive the economic development of surrounding areas.
In order to meet the owner's requirements for bridge design specifications, China Railway Construction integrated international and domestic resources, fully utilized the advantages of the entire industrial chain, and overcame many difficulties brought about by the new crown epidemic. After more than a year of bidding organization and negotiation, it finally won the bid for the project with the best plan. This is another major breakthrough made by China Railway Construction International Group to implement the "Overseas First" strategy and deepen its efforts in the Caribbean market. China Railway Construction International Group will take this project as an opportunity to implement the national "Belt and Road" initiative, promote China's technology and equipment to go global, and make positive contributions to China-Guangdong-based pragmatic cooperation.
