Jishi Town is the seat of the county government of Xunhua Salar Autonomous County, Qinghai. It is a small town built on the Yellow River.

Jishi Town is therefore called Xunhua City . Its city wall was first built in the eighth year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1730) and was completed the following year. According to historical records, the circumference of Xunhua Ancient City is nearly five miles long, more than 400 meters long from east to west, more than 700 meters wide from north to south, and more than 7 meters high in the city wall. The ancient city is protected by moats on all sides.

This group of pictures was taken around 1932, and the ancient city wall of Jishi Town was preserved very well. It is a pity that the tall ancient city wall has basically disappeared, and we can only see its charm from the old photos.

1932 Jishi Town

was taken from the south mountain to the north. The Jishi Town wall in the camera is very complete and stands quietly at the foot of the mountain. There are city gates and city towers on the east and west sides of the city wall.

Jishi Town Wall

Looking at Jishi Town from a closer place, the city wall is tall and regular. In the 14th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1809), the city wall collapsed partially due to an earthquake. In the third year of Tongzhi (1864), the city wall was repaired.

The moat outside the city wall winds along the city wall into the distance. There was some water accumulation in the trench at this time. I wonder if it had just rained.

Winter outside the city

This is the west side of the city wall of Jishi Town. It is winter, and many branches of the trees have been pruned manually. There were also some newly planted small trees near the city wall, which showed that people at that time paid great attention to the greening around the city.

Ximen Wengcheng

Ancient trees, continuous mountains, towering city walls, and a vicissitudes of the west are vividly seen. The West Gate Wengcheng and the city gate tower are clearly visible.

The east gate of the ancient city

The east gate of Jishi Town and 官网. A hard mountain-style enemy building is built on the wall city, and the double-eaves city gate tower is very majestic. Beyond the city wall is a dense field of crops.

The scene outside the Xiguan city gate seen through the Ximen Wengcheng City Gate Cave in Jishi Town, two Salar children were carrying buckets to Yellow River to fetch water.

Corner of the city wall

At the corner of the city wall of Jishi Town, you can see neat trees planted beside the avenue outside the city wall. This section of the moat has become a wide loess avenue.

Outsider

Under the tall city wall, there was only a passerby leading the donkey . Because there were too few pedestrians, it seemed quite desolate. The last major repair of this city wall was in the seventh year of Guangxu (1881), when the Dongcheng Gate Tower, Wengcheng Gate and Daughter Wall were repaired.

Outside the city, the people of Caotanba Village are using the flat avenue as a threshing ground. They are all hardworking Salar Muslims.

wheat field panoramic

is still the scene I saw on the west side of the city wall. There are many harvested wheat straws piled up on the open space outside the city wall, and several farmers are driving donkeys to press the wheat.

Jishi Town in summer

Through the picture, we can feel the strong sunlight. The trees next to the city wall have already become lush and full of vitality.

In the evening

In the evening, under the vast sky with blue sky and white clouds, the northern city wall and the southern mountains in the background are bathed in the sunset, shining brightly.
