spans Lingdingyang and connects Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. On October 24, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was officially opened to traffic. The beautiful shapes of the "Chinese Knot" on the Qingzhou Channel Bridge and the "Dolphin Tower" on the Jianghai Direct Channel Bridge are the most iconic in the entire Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project. two major landscapes.

You must have seen their heroic appearance, but you may not know that these two sets of huge steel structural components were manufactured and assembled in Zhongshan.

Southern+ found their maker and deciphered the story behind it.

"Building blocks" piece by piece to spell out the "Chinese Knot"

As a world-class project, the "Chinese Knot" on the Qingzhou Channel Bridge of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the earliest completed iconic landscape in the entire project, and it is also the most Chinese part. On April 20, 2015, the hoisting of the knot-shaped bracing of the Qi'ao cable tower on the Qingzhou Channel was completed, and the "Chinese knot" became the finishing touch of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The "Chinese Knot" that looks light and graceful is actually a giant all-steel structure weighing 780 tons. Zhao Dabin, deputy general manager of China Railway Shanqiao Group Co., Ltd. and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge CB01 project manager, introduced the manufacturing process of the "Chinese Knot".

Compared with ordinary straight-line bridge towers, these two "Chinese knots" can better balance the needs of structure and aesthetics. In order to meet the perfect requirements of quality and size, the "Chinese Knot" is divided into multiple segments to be manufactured on land, and then assembled segment by segment on site. Bolts are used to connect the segments to present the shape of the "Chinese Knot". The bolts alone The number exceeds 18,000.

China Railway Shanqiao Group Zhongshan Base is where these steel components are manufactured. All the steel box beams constructed by the company have gone through this process: first, "plate units" of more than ten meters long steel box beam components are manufactured at 's Qinhuangdao industrial park, and then transported to the Zhongshan base. They are assembled into large components like building blocks, and the important process of painting is completed, and then transported piece by piece to the bridge construction site.

Zhao Dabin said that the small construction of the "Chinese Knot" weighs more than 10 tons, and the large one weighs more than 50 tons. They all need to be hoisted to a height of 160 meters for assembly, and the steel structure and concrete must be closely coordinated. It’s not hard to imagine how difficult it would be to make the slightest mistake.

"Big Mac" helps complete the "world's first flip"

In order to better complete the construction tasks of large-scale projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, China Railway Shanqiao Group has invested 1.5 billion yuan to set up a base in Zhongshan. Since the Zhongshan base was put into operation at the end of 2012, it has completed the assembly of 779 small sections and 72 large sections of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, with a total steel structure weight of approximately 180,000 tons.

In fact, not only one Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge construction company chose to set up a production base in Ma'an Island, Cuiheng New District, Zhongshan City - it is very convenient to use the Hengmen Waterway to access the Lingdingyang estuary, which is very convenient for transporting large structures of the bridge. China Railway Shanqiao Group has also specially built a new 55-meter-wide and 160-meter-long harbor terminal, equipped with two 2,000-ton gantry cranes, the largest of its kind currently, which not only meets the needs of the large-section steel box girders of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge The ship's transportation also helped complete the "world's first flip".

In June 2016, the last "dolphin" shaped steel tower on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge's river-to-sea channel bridge was hoisted, bringing the bridge one step closer to completion. However, the third "dolphin tower" was once a difficulty in the project - due to the constraints of the on-site pontoon hoisting working conditions, it had to do a 180-degree "turn over", but the installed "dolphin tower" was heavy With a weight of 2,560 tons and a height of 105 meters, the entire transformation of a large steel tower of this scale is unprecedented in the world.

In the end, the task fell to the two "Big Macs" at the Zhongshan Base of China Railway Shanqiao Group. After 5 months of preparation and simulation, including a 3-month "physical examination" conducted by the Zhongshan Inspection Institute of the Guangdong Provincial Special Equipment Inspection Institute, they broke down the "turn over" 180 degrees into 136 steps, and tested them while turning. , it took more than 100 people to work continuously for more than a day to complete the "world's first flip".

Leave no piece of garbage, protect white dolphinshomeland

The builders of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in Zhongshan have created many "firsts in the world". Among them is a "national model worker". Although he is not a construction worker, he has It played a very important role in ensuring the smooth progress of the project. He is the director of the Safety Supervision Department of China Railway Shanqiao Southern Equipment Engineering Co., Ltd. and the deputy director of the HSE Management Department of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge CB01 Project Management Department, who was awarded the title of "National Model Worker" in 2015. On October 23, Ma Xueli and Zhao Dabin set out from Zhongshan to attend the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. "I am really very excited, and I still haven't let go." On the 24th, Ma Xueli said.

The HSE management that Ma Xueli is engaged in is responsible for the occupational health of personnel, site safety and environmental protection management during the construction process. As a large cross-sea passage, the importance of safety is unquestionable. Due to its special location, the requirements for environmental protection are also very high. During the construction process, in addition to daily safety maintenance, Ma Xueli and his colleagues also experienced the test of many typhoons, including last year's "Hato" and this year's "Mangkhut", without any danger or accident.

It is worth mentioning that the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has very high environmental protection requirements. Ma Xueli said that since Lingdingyang is the habitat of the Chinese white dolphin, they will specifically train personnel on the protection of the Chinese white dolphin before construction, and formulate relevant protection plans. Once a white dolphin approaches the site, the work will be stopped or appropriately driven away.

After so many years of construction, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has not left a single piece of garbage on the sea. All solid waste is treated according to high standards. Daily garbage is sorted and carried back to the garbage station at the base by engineering staff to achieve "zero pollution" Target.
