He studied in primary and secondary schools in Wuhan, and established his ideal of being a farmer.
Because his parents were transferred to work, Yuan Longping traveled to many places during his childhood. In 1936, 6-year-old Yuan Longping died because of My father was transferred to work in the Pinghan Railway Bureau, and the family moved to Wuhan. Yuan Longping attended Hankou Rotary Primary School.
In the first grade of elementary school, the teacher took them to visit a gardening field. All kinds of flowers were spread on the ground like blankets. This made the young Yuan Longping yearn for "the beauty of the countryside and the joy of agriculture". Yuan Longping later said in an interview that he was really "impressed" by the beautiful gardening field, and he planned to learn farming in the future.
This outing laid the foundation for Yuan Longping’s ideal of studying agriculture and influenced his life.

In 1946, due to another change in his father's job, Yuan Longping moved back to Hankou with his family from Chongqing and transferred to Hankou Boxue Middle School (now Wuhan No. 4 Middle School). Yuan Longping later told reporters in an interview: "My good health and English foundation were all acquired at my alma mater."
"My alma mater has very strict English requirements. If you fail other courses, you can make up for it. But if you fail in English, you will have to repeat the grade, so students don’t dare to be careless about English.” Yuan Longping said that when he was a freshman in high school, there were three teachers who taught English. Mr. Begley, an Englishman, taught essays. My wife teaches reading and conversation, and teacher Zhou Ding, the academic director, teaches grammar.
In various frequent international academic activities, Yuan Longping does not need a translator and can communicate with foreign scholars proficiently in English.
Yuan Longping loves sports, among which swimming is his favorite sport. Data shows that when he was 17 years old, he was the Wuhan 100-meter and 400-meter freestyle champion.
In 1947, a swimming competition was held in Hubei Province. Yuan Longping was not selected because of his small size. Unconvinced, he sat on the back of a participating classmate's bicycle and sneaked into the arena. Seeing his enthusiasm, the physical education teacher reluctantly agreed to let him try. As a result, he unexpectedly won the first place in the men's 100-meter and 400-meter freestyle in the Hankou Division (Wuhan City). Soon, he won two silver medals in men's freestyle in the provincial competition.
Due to his good physical condition, Yuan Longping was almost selected into the national swimming team and almost selected to be a pilot.
On October 6, 2009, Academician Yuan Longping looked through the school history book at the 110th anniversary of Wuhan No. 4 Middle School.

Many interactions have helped Hubei develop
Over the years, Yuan Longping has interacted with Hubei many times and has always been concerned about Hubei's agricultural development.
He joined Wuhan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and led the research and development of international polyploid rice.
In 2016, Yuan Longping was hired as a distinguished academician of the Crop Science Institute of Wuhan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to guide the research and development of polyploid series characteristic rice breeding of the institute.
Polyploid rice has large grains and high quality. It is twice as heavy as ordinary rice and 36.7% higher than ordinary rice. Simply put, polyploid rice is the "big fat boy" version of rice, with large grains and high nutrition.
Yuan Longping said that he would work with a team of experts in Wuhan to achieve a yield of 17 tons per hectare of super rice, and a planting area of 100,000 acres is expected to generate social and economic benefits of 1 billion yuan.
He was full of praise for the "co-cropping of shrimp and rice" in Qianjiang, China, and once checked the pulse of Qianjiang's shrimp and rice industry.

In Yuan Longping's office, Wu Zuyun and his party brought Qianjiang shrimp rice, Qianjiang crayfish , and introduced to Yuan Longping in detail the economic and social development of Qianjiang in recent years and the benefits that the "shrimp and rice co-cropping" ecological farming model has brought to agriculture and rural areas.
