Jiuhuashan Temple Fair, also known as Ksitigarbha Temple Fair, is a large-scale folk pilgrimage festival held to commemorate the birthday of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (July 30th of the lunar calendar). It lasts for about a month and has a history of more than 1,000 years. It was listed on the "China Intangible Cultural Heritage List" in June 2011 and attracts a large number of believers, pilgrims and tourists from home and abroad every year.

Water and Land Dharma Assembly

Water and Land Dharma Assembly is also called the "Water and Land Dharma Assembly". During the temple fair, Buddhist monks held a large-scale Water and Land Dharma Assembly. Hundreds of monks and lay people participated in the Dharma Assembly, which lasted for dozens of days and was a grand scene.

Repentance

Buddhist teachings believe that all living beings have sins of varying degrees. According to Buddhist rituals, they must express repentance in front of the Buddha and reform. Methods of repentance include: Emperor Liang’s Repentance, Ksitigarbha Repentance, Guanyin Repentance, etc.

Guarding the Pagoda

On the eve of Ksitigarbha’s birthday, Buddhist monks, nuns, believers, disciples and local people sat around the Ksitigarbha Pagoda, chanting the name of "Namo Great Vow Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" and stayed up all night.

Recite the "Ksitigarbha Sutra"

Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva once made a great wish: "Only when all living beings have crossed over will they realize Puti. Until the hell is empty, I swear that I will never become a Buddha." Believers and disciples respect it as "Ksitigarbha's Great Vow". People recite the Ksitigarbha Sutra mainly to learn from Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's spirit of "If I don't go to hell, who will go to hell" and his great wish to save all living beings.

Release of animals

In the process of temple fair activities, releasing animals is an essential activity. Believers, common people and Buddhist monks bought turtles, turtles and various fish from the market and released them.

Buddha statue consecration

During the temple fair, Buddhist monks will hold a consecration ceremony for the newly sculpted Buddha statue. The eminent monk will recite the "consecration mantra" to achieve the spirituality of the Buddha statue.

Prayer for World Peace Dharma Assembly

Buddhism is known as a religion of compassion and has the spirit of peace. Every year during the temple fair, Buddhist monks hold a grand "Praying for World Peace Dharma Assembly" to pray for lasting world peace.

Folk activities

During the temple fair, the mountain people took advantage of the large number of pilgrims and tourists to carry out business activities. At the same time, they performed "dragon lantern dance", "lion lantern" and other cultural and entertainment activities, and performed "Mu Lian Saves His Mother", "Nine Watching Days", Nuo opera programs such as "Liu Wenlong" were very lively.

Flame mouth

Flame mouth, also known as "face burning". This is an important Buddhist activity in Buddhism. Most Buddhist believers ask Buddhist masters to pray for their deceased ancestors.

Baizi Hui

is a kind of gathering (group) organized by pilgrims from other places to worship Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Pilgrims fasted devoutly, carried incense poles, raised flags and beat gongs, and lined up to worship the Ksitigarbha Pagoda. "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is called "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" and stays up all night.

Qian Seng Zhai

Large Buddhist temples will open Qian Seng Zhai during temple fairs to provide offerings to the monks.
