Later, Beijing Sports University (formerly Beijing Institute of Sport) recruited workers, peasants and soldiers college students, and gave 10 places to Shanghai. Sun Qilin was lucky enough to be admitted because he had practiced table tennis, had an athlete certificate, and performed well in rural labor. However, table tennis has been neglected for many years. Coupled with his age, his hope of becoming a professional athlete has been shattered. He can only focus on his studies and hopes to engage in table tennis education in the future.

After graduating from college in 1974, in order to take care of his family, Sun Qilin gave up the opportunity to work for the National Sports Commission and came to Shanghai Jiaotong University, which is close to home, and became a physical education teacher. Except for several times when he was sent abroad to serve as a foreign aid coach and a national youth team coach, he spent most of his 45 years at Shanghai Jiaotong University. Even during his more than 20 years as the dean of the Physical Education Department of SJTU, he has always been active on the front line of teaching and scientific research.
In addition to teaching, Sun Qilin is actively engaged in referee work. After becoming an international referee in 1988, he became active in the international arena. He has officiated in 9 World Table Tennis Championships, including serving as the chief referee or deputy chief referee in 5 World Table Tennis Championships and 7 World Cups. As a technical official of the International Olympic Committee, he has also participated in three Olympic Games and countless other international competitions. During the 2008 World Table Tennis Championships, the then ITTF President Shalala personally presented him with the "Contribution Award" in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of table tennis. To this day, Sun Qilin is still the first referee to receive this honor.

As the director of the Sports Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he now also serves as a doctoral tutor in management science and engineering and a master's tutor in physical education and training, with two doctoral students and eight master's students. But what he is most proud of is that he insists on teaching undergraduates twice a week.

He said that with 18 weeks of classes in each semester, his goal is to "learn what you don't know, further improve what you know, and those who are high-level to expand to higher places."
Every time he attends class, Sun Qilin's requirements for students are very simple, that is, "If you can't sweat profusely for 90 minutes, it is not a physical education class. After a class, the students' clothes are wet, and the teacher's clothes must also be wet."
Sun Qilin has already made detailed plans for his retirement life. No matter what, he will never leave his beloved table tennis. He first hopes to further promote the implementation of the table tennis tier system. During the World Table Tennis Championships held in Budapest in May this year, the ITTF held the 16th Sports Science Conference. At the conference, Sun Qilin introduced the relevant situation of the paper "Thoughts on the Establishment of the Table Tennis Rank System and Analysis of International Promotion Strategies" co-authored with student Chen Weiwei, which attracted great attention.
