1871, the American Christian Supervisory Council established the Cunyang Academy on Shiquan Street, Suzhou. In 1879, it moved to Tiancizhuang and renamed Boxi Academy, and later incorporated it into Shanghai Zhongxi Academy.
1895, China suffered a crushing defeat in 1895, which inspired young people's enthusiasm for learning Western knowledge. In 1896, in response to a group of young Chinese scholars' request to learn English, Sun Lewen, the pastor of Gongxiang Church of Suzhou Supervisory Council, opened Gongxiang Zhongxi Academy in Suzhou , and the first batch of students had 25 students.
